With a delivery of heavy bass-lines, contagious dance grooves and a feel-good atmosphere, that’s how Mikeyj describes himself as a DJ.
Never afraid to go too deep, his emotive musical selections are his own therapy. Having grown up on his mother’s eclectic combination of funk/soul and RnB music (Earth, Wind & Fire, Stevie Wonder, Al Green), And fathers rock collection (Doobie Brothers, Eagles, Pink Floyd)… all which became infused with his own love for both hip-hop and electronic music. Mikeyj ended up with quite a mixed variety of musical influence. Today, this is portrayed into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that he loves best: infectious synth work, heavy bass-lines, and occasional vocal hooks… all held together with a foot-shuffling house beat.
A very proud member of his local community, Mikeyj is no stranger to the ups-and-downs of a small-town music scene. Though he loves playing in nightclubs, and private functions (wedding and birthdays), his love for music goes beyond the spectrum of mixing tunes. As a budding beat maker and musician, he has found plenty of ways to express himself musically. As well as helping a promotion team bring forth musical talent to the Manawatu.
For me, it’s all about mood and a deep, hypnotic groove… playing those tracks that get you tapping your feet and nodding your head without you realizing it, regardless of genre, tempo, style, or release date.
