Great central location. Quiet, and only a very short walk to town. Rooms are basic and have all the usual - tv, air con, kettle. They give shampoo and conditioner, but not body wash... only hotel soap, which is hard to rinse off your whole body.nStaff were super friendly and really helpful.nPool and spa were out of order while I was there, and the gym is small with nothing to wipe down machines in between uses, and so hot, as the remote for the air con is missing. There was no air flow in there at all.nGenerally a good base if you need to be in Whangarei for a few days!
Well it has some nostalgic qualities and the upstairs and downstairs are not sound proof but if you like decor that reminds you of the past and feel like home it has that feel. Very good on their cleaning, just a little more effort on the outside of the shower would be good. Comfortable bed and pillows and nice sized tv, great mirror and lighting with the bonus of dry air conditioning, they have all your needs but no microwave or cutlery but they have a breakfast service along with lunch and dinner. I can’t say I can recommend the dinner menu the chef is not quite at the standard needed for the place. It has a separate relaxing and alfresco bar and small gym and pool but its location is great
Great setting for a hotel. The rooms are somewhat tired and the external AC units are rotten with rust. The showers are not cleaned properly and a lot of old gunge build up along the door frames. Spa and pool are awesome and very clean. Good servicenfrom the staff members.nGreat walking distance to the Basin and along the river
Room:nThe sound insulation is extremely poor. We stayed on the ground floor and could clearly hear footsteps from the room above throughout the night. While the room itself was reasonably clean and the basic amenities were acceptable, the lack of soundproofing significantly affected our sleep.nnLocation:nThe hotel is centrally located, which makes it convenient for transportation and accessing nearby areas. This is one of the few positive aspects of the stay.nnService – Completely Unacceptable:nOur stay was from the afternoon of January 7th to midday on January 10th. We had no issues and almost no interaction with staff until checkout — which is when the real problem occurred.nnWe had only booked breakfast for the morning of January 8th. However, at checkout, the receptionist insisted on charging us for breakfast on both January 7th and 8th. This makes absolutely no sense. We checked in in the afternoon of January 7th, so it is physically impossible for us to have had breakfast at the hotel earlier that day.nnDespite this clear and obvious fact, the receptionist a woman in her 40s continued to argue. Another staff member standing beside her clearly recognized the mistake and repeatedly tried to correct her, yet she ignored those reminders and persisted with her incorrect claim. This lack of basic reasoning and attention to facts was astonishing.nnAs a result, nearly 15 minutes of our checkout time were wasted over an error that should have been immediately acknowledged and corrected. Even worse, there was no apology whatsoever during or after the incident. The interaction ended with her dismissively saying, “Fine, fine, just go,” which was rude, unprofessional, and deeply disrespectful.nnThis was not just a billing mistake — it was a clear failure of staff training, service attitude, and basic professionalism. The experience left us frustrated and upset, and it seriously damaged our overall impression of both the hotel and Whangārei. What should have been a pleasant stay ended on a very sour note.
Love the hotel and still staying in it. However, extremely disappointed with the front desk Manager im assuming saying they couldn't do a cash out of $4 to use their dryer. Had to walk to dairy, buy something and ask for cash to use the hotels dryer. Been an exhausting day of walking, then have to walk more. Disappointed actually. Poor management in my opinion.nPlus side is, the Maori girls at the reception are brilliant. Absolutely brilliant with their customer service and friendliness. Very accommodating and a pay rise is recommended!
