Devonport Naval Base – HMNZS PHILOMEL is a fascinating spot, even from the outside. I didn’t get the chance to go inside, but the exterior alone is impressive. The military architecture tells stories of New Zealand’s naval history, and the setting offers incredible views of Auckland City—especially at sunset. There’s a peaceful green space near the entrance that’s perfect for relaxing, taking in the scenery, and soaking up the historical atmosphere. A great place to chill and appreciate the unique blend of heritage and views.
Great location, but obviously public access is not permitted unless you are particularly favoured.nnSail in on the ferry from Auckland CBD and get a good view of the fleet - frigates, OPVs and Auxiliary
Our experience was by a member of our family who served at HMNZS PHILOMEL from 1942 - 1944. A Shadow Box display is underway to acknowledge the service of RNZN Wren Gwenneth Thompsons
Not allowed inside without a formal appointment. Told they have tunnels from the base going inland to supply their ships.
Very short, steep hike but the view is A-mazing!
