Dargaville Museum

About

Telling the stories of the Kauri Coast including stories from Maori, Dalamtian gumdiggers, pioneers and maritime history.

Story

Our stories tell of how the district has developed through the years: from the 16 metre long pre-European Maori canoe through to the replica gun-diggers camp, from shipwreck relics recovered from the coast to the masts of the ill-fated Greenpeace protest ship Rainbow Warrior. The Museum provides a number of outstanding displays to interest the whole family.

Fantastic, informative place. Loved the gum diggers & outside displays too. Great volunteer team. Also loved the heritage walk. Thanks for your hard work!
Local museum, admission fee is charged, it’s nice to spend several hours during raining days ,you get know better about town and New Zealand.

One of the most interesting museums I've visited. A diverse range of items, well documented and organized in logical collections. It did make me laugh to see a few items I still own and use at home! $15 entry for adults, worth it, we spent 2-1/2 hours here, and my wife really enjoyed it too.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Lovely museum right up the top of the hill with beautiful views. Loads of parking for camper vans. Very interesting and well laid out. Good lighting to read about exhibits. We loved the nautical theme throughout. Not too much to look at and great variety of exhibits. Something for everyone. The accordions were an extra as was the clothing. You could easily spend a morning here and stay for a picnic with only birdsong to hear!!
So much fun! Displays relaxant to the area, and so many items can be touched. Interactive for kids. Show them the rotary phone we dailed or the last names still living in the area. The Marine display is nice and also the "collections" display. School holiday must for all locals and travelers with a treasure hunt keeping kids busy for more then an hour.
Really friendly team, greeted us with a smile and chat. Gave us a brief explanation on the historic pieces that can be found in the museum. Beautiful gifts can also be purchased from here. Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
I had been to this museum many years ago and it wasn't great. But since then it has an upgrade and I loved it. It was well worth watching the videos at the beginning although we only watched the Kauri one. I loved the murals that helped tell the story about each display. I also really liked the old rooms, the dentist, the sitting room, doctors room, grocery store etc. They need another big room to tell the Maori story, and I know they are working on that. It took us 2 hours to see inside only. It was a great way to spend a wet Dargaville afternoon.
Probably the most amazing museum I've been in my life. It has literally everything you could imagine in there!! For a little town like this to have a museum with that much collection in there it is pretty incredible. You can easily spend hours at looking at all the stuff. Bit of history about kaury gum, Maori, boats found around there. And lots of other stuff. And the view over the town is quite nice.
This is a huge and sophisticated museum based around the early gumdigging days, shipping and pioneer life. Amazing!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
