My sister moved here in November 2024. She passed in hospital Jan 2025. When asked to have her nappy changed we were refused. Each patient is only allocated an amount per day. She died with severe nappy rash
Hideous place, I honestly don't know how it is allowed to operate.nMy family visited in Aug '24 to view with regard to finding a dementia unit for my 85 year old Mum. This was local but also the only place that currently had a vacancy, I could immediately see why!nnThe grounds looked nice so the very first impression was ok but upon entering I was hit by a very strong smell of stale urine.nnWhile we waited in the hallway for the manager to give us a tour, I had a chance to look around, I was honestly stunned. The front door, your very first point of contact had paint rubbed off due to many hands over the years and obviously had not been maintained or painted in a very long time.nnThe hideously old carpet in the hallway had a dark stain right down the middle, it was utterly filthy. I imagine this carpet was probably 50 years old or more.nnThe lounge area was filled with elders sitting, asleep with their mouths hanging open, looking dead as they do. It was weird that they all looked like this though and made me wonder how many were medicated. This was in stark contrast to the place we eventually found for Mum where no one looked like that.nnFrom there we went to see the resthome dining room which was very small and dated then onto the secure dementia area which is where Mum would need to be. Security seemed good in that unit, but as a previous reviewer wrote, we were not signed in to the resthome when we arrived and could easily have just wandered about.nnThe manager showed us the ward cell block for the dementia unit. The rooms were incredibly small, I could almost touch both sides of the room at once, there was just a single tiny window but no access to outside. It was all just beige with zero in the way of decoration.nnThere were, from memory, twelve rooms in that portion, serviced by two ablution rooms. Again all beige, very reminisent of a campground shower block.nnI have a niece involved in elder care in another town and she gave us some things to look out for, one of which was 'what do the towels look like?', as this is a good indication of the level of care supplied. Well I only needed to see one towel. It should have been thrown out years ago, absolutely threadbare, thin, hard and rough. I would use it to check the oil but wouldn't use it to dry my car for fear of scratching it. It was honestly that bad.nnThis place was so bad that another niece who was with us decided then and there that she would quit her job and look after Mum at home rather than force her to stay there. She was actually teary about the possibility of having Mum have to stay there!nnSo we left, stunned how bad the place was and went to another home in Kumeu, which I will also review for balance. The difference couldn't be more stark! The other place is like a 5 star hotel and incredibly was $200 per week cheaper than Craigweil House $2200 vs $2400. Thankfully a space had opened up an hour before thank you universe.nnPlease, do your research, there are good places out there, really good places, you don't need to submit your loved one to places like Craigweil, there are much, much better options out there.
I would like to thank all the staff at craigwell and my dads nurse angel for making my dads last days so beautiful, treating him with the most respect and love...we were so blessed to have you guys in our lives at the hardest time of our lives..
My mother has had the very best of care at Craigweil since her departure from her recent care in Kumeu. I had so many issues.. I am glad my mother has the care and attention she deserves at Craigweil and she gets fantastic food, activities and entertainment during her last years of her life in hospital. Thank you Craigweil staff and management for all your hardwork in looking after my mother, I know she has complicated health conditions and my family have been so happy with all your hardwork. James
