Wanted to come in to try the food for myself after reading the reviews. It was actually good! Batter is obviously thicker than most places but it is nice and has a good crunch. Fish is fresh. Battered snapper is good sized and tasty. Chips are hot and a good amount per scoop. Thanks for the good meal!Food: 5/5
So Refreshing to find a fish and chip shop that caters for Coeliacs. I’ve been going to Craig’s for years, But having only recently been diagnosed with coeliac disease I feared I could no longer have my favourite and also being a smaller beach town there aren’t many coeliac safe options around for takeaways. So I was over the moon to find out that they cater for coeliacs and have a gluten free menu and a separate fryer for all the gf stuff. I had been waiting till I was back in whanga next to try them and boy it was absolutely delicious and I can’t wait to come back and have more The batter was so good!!! The Owners were so lovely and accommodating and definitely know their stuff. 100/10. YUM - Note you do need to call in advance to place an order for Gluten free fish and chips, but honestly that’s the least we can do and super easy, when they are going above and beyond making a huge effort to cater for coeliacs as well as being a super busy normal fish and chippy shop too!
Just went there this evening. Very friendly and helpful. They do fantastic gluten free so tasty! and were so accomodating for us with coeliacs. Recommend you call in the morning to order gluten free for dinner so they have time to prep :
I wasn't expecting the type of fish that you would get from a supermarket packet! Chips were nice but a very small portion.Food: 1/5
Absolutely perfect fish and chips. Fish was juicy and tender and very well cooked. Chips was crunchy and yet soft on the inside. Definitely going here again next beach hop.Food: 5/5
Amazing food even though it was busy at beach hop. Great value for money. They contact u when your orders going into the cooker so u have time to come get it fresh and hot.Food: 5/5
If you are looking for the worst customer service in NZ and a truly terrible take on fish and chips , look no further! Craigs is the place . You will be greeted with a wonderfully miserable woman who clearly has a lack of respect for people never mind customers , if that doesn’t stop you . Wait until you get home to rip open that paper that you’ve waited all day for - bright radioactive battered fish , crinkle cut wet chips and then find out you’ve been over charged… a delightful little place that would give Karen’s diner a real good run for their money! Thanks Craig’s. Never again!
Called in a day ahead to ask if they could accomodate gluten free for coeliacs, as stated they can on thier website. Owners wife said they could. Called back in to order only to find out that the owners wife could not accomodate 12 pieces for us. We have family visiting and a couple of us are coeliac. Wanted to have a shared gf lunch, and the lady was rude and said she would not do 12 pieces for us, after telling me to call back in with my order. Not very nice, and not accomodating even after I gave notice as stated on thier site. Also, extremely rude to tell a customer what they should and shouldn't order. That is the customers right to order what they want without prejudice. Why even do gf if you are going to lecture people on how many pieces they should order? To tell someone you will be too busy with regular customers to accomodate an in advance order, and to also then tell them how many pieces they can order max is ridiculous. Don't recommend for Coeliacs as they are not accomodating as thier website states. In response to the below statement. I only have 6 people in my group, who wanted 2 pieces of fish a piece. You assumed and did not ask. Who are you to tell a customer what is reasonable and what is not? My whole family is gf. My medical condition is not your concern and you shouldn't tell people what to do or how to live. I never told you 12 people. You are the one being unreasonable, because you were unwilling to listen to what I had to say. You didn't want to cook it due to time.....fine. Your website should change then to cooking only 2-3 pieces of gf fish per 1 coeliac order. I have never been treated so rudely over the phone, over a request for food. Poor business, poor attitude.
The service was good and the wait time was quick but that was on Wednesday which is not busy. Chips cooked perfect but the batter on the fish to thick , looks like they use flour and milk not great batter best to use soda water and flour fluffy and crispy. Just saying
We had superb service and awesome fish & chips on our visit. Our son is celiac GF, so we rang ahead and spoke to Liz the owner and she put the separate fryer on for us and explained their processes for Celiac customers. You do need to ring ahead in good time and check re the fryer, and that is clear on their website. Met Liz at the Fish & Chip shop, and Liz could not be more helpful even though they were very busy. Fish & chips were really tasty and the service appreciated.
