Story

Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu is the largest art institution in the South Island and home to one of New Zealand's most important public art collections.
Located in the heart of the city's Cultural Precinct, our Maori name, Te Puna o Waiwhetu, relates to the life-giving properties of the artesian spring on which the Gallery is built and our role in contributing to the cultural wellbeing of the community.

A fantastic array of exhibitions in a modern gallery. The reception team were friendly and helpful, directing me to the exhibits, offering a map and chatting on the floor while unobtrusively keeping an eye on things.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A must visit if you are visiting Christchurch. All staff are very helpful and they offer free guided tours throughout the day. I will definitely be back when I visit Christchruch again.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo wait
Nice museum with some interesting exhibits. Theme is primarily contemporary art. The gift shop had a good selection of items. The guides are very informative. Good for a visit on a rainy day.
Everything from Rodin to Kahukiwa, van de Velden to Rita Angus, Bancroft to McCahon and Albrecht to Hotere just the tip of the iceberg. Beautiful building in it' s own right. Great cafe and restaurant area. Clean and staffed by interested and knowledgeable folk. Five star as far as I'm concerned. ...... and it's free. We are very fortunate in Christchurch - long may it continue.

Went to the market and really enjoyed the buzz and craft stalls and food options on offer. Well worth a visit when the next one is on.
The Museum is for free, aswell as the cloakroom. You just can leave your backpack at the service desk. There where 6 exhibitions on that all feature different kind of perspectives and ideas about art - abstract, contemporary, indigenous artcraft, but also traumawork and pieces that talk about sensitive topics. They feature historical pieces and modern ones. I spent around 3,5 hours there and had a nice experience. If you take your time and look carefully, you will find some artwork that really touches you. It is not a high end museum, compared to the really big ones, but it is totally for free! So nothing to critizise here.
Loved the temporary installation on the first floor. I also liked the range of art displayed throughout the gallery.
Great gallery with plenty of interesting exhibits. A real asset to the city and having free entry is awesome!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
The staff and museum were awesome the art was an interesting challenge for the mind and that is my opinion for artworks displayed at this time.
