A nice quiet old but renovated church. I can find some tomb stone dated 1845 in the cemetery next to the church. The entrance fee is NZ$2 or donation as you wish.
Christ Church in Russell, New Zealand, is more than just a place of worship—it's a powerful historical landmark that carries a deep sense of peace and spirituality. As the oldest surviving church in New Zealand, built in 1835, it has stood as a symbol of faith and resilience for nearly two centuries.nnDespite being a Buddhist, I couldn’t help but feel something special upon visiting. There is a quiet, almost divine presence that makes you pause and reflect. The church's simple yet beautiful design, surrounded by an old graveyard with headstones dating back to the early 19th century, adds to its charm. Whether you're drawn to history, spirituality, or just looking for a peaceful place to sit and absorb the atmosphere, Christ Church is a must-visit in Russell.
The oldest Christian Church in the first Capitol of New Zealand, Russell. This shares a lot of historical details. A lovely neighborhood as well.
We were informed by a local that this was the first church to be built in N.Z. There are in the external walls of the building musket shot holes created by historic fighting. The earliest burial grave we could find was 1845, but I am sure there are older ones. A truly well maintained church set in a picturesque landscape. May stay forever.
First ever Church built in New Zealand and operating even today. Great experience.
