Cave Stream

Story

Cave Stream, also known as Broken River Cave, is a long cave in New Zealand, located on State Highway 73. It is 40km from Arthur's Pass and 100km from Christchurch.It is a popular site for passing tourists, however in spring and during heavy rains it can be dangerous to enter the cave. There have been two deaths in the cave, one due to drowning and one to hypothermia. The cave is easy to explore when the river is low. There is a minor waterfall to climb at the far end, although bolts and chains make this easy to negotiate.

For some reason I did not realize you would be walking through knee-waist deep water the entire way, about 30-40min. I thought there would be more dry parts to stand on but not at all, and the water level did not seem to be especially high. Completed with my partner wearing headlamps, bathing suits, and shoes partner had sandals and I had tightly laced boat shoes on. Definitely would not have made it through barefoot, my feet and legs were very cold but they were fine. At times the current can be quite strong and you are basically climbing/walking through small waterfalls. It's also narrow enough that it's often hard for two people to be side by side. Never experienced anything like it, it was amazing and frightening at the same time! On a sunny day it's wonderful and gives quite the thrill. Bathrooms are around the car park and it's a short walk from my there maybe 5-10min.
Absolutly AMAZING!!!!!!! Take a torch, good hiking shoes and warm clothes and do it!! About 45min in the total darkness, water up to the chest, some steep parts to climb, but maaan!! What an adventure!!!! You'll feel like Indiana Jones!!! LOVED IT!!
I am not an experienced climber or caver or anything so have that in mind. 09.10.23 water level pretty high, about navel level for me, I am 191 cm. We had to turn around at the very end, one of the last waterfalls had to much water streaming down for us to be able to climb up it. Water was cold but not a huge issue if you have wool socks and underwear.

Very beautiful and frightening cave. We did the carving on the 8/10/23. I am 1m54 and I got a lot of trouble with the 1.5 m waterfall the middle one, the pressure of the flow was very strong. I couldn't pass. Hopefully my partner 1m76 and a bit climber was there to pull me out. I lost my head torch, my beanie and my special shoes for river... carried away by the current. Hopefully I bring my waterproof bag with a towel and more clothes to change inside the cave when you are around the rockfall. I thought it was more about climbing, walking with water around your knees but no you are into the water !!
Super awesome and fun activity. Only climbing out of the cave is a bit sketchy. For my gf who is 1m68 the water came to waist level. I did it with swimming pants, a rash suit and sandals which was perfectly possible. Although I would recommend some form of water shoes because the rocks are really uneven. The cold didn't really bother us inside the cave. An unforgettable experience
Au top. Avant, on s'est renseigné dans un i visitor pour avoir les recommandations. Franchement génial. Atypique. On a marché environ 30 minutes dans la grotte. Le plus profond c'est au départ. Perso ma tenue vestimentaire était parfaite pour moi : Basket sans chaussettes, legging, brassière et k-way. Le k-way était rentré dans le legging. Du coup, le haut de mon corps est resté au sec tout le long. Donc je n'ai pas eu froid. L'eau est froide, mais comme vous êtes toujours en mouvement cela ne se ressent pas . Allez y, c'était une superbe aventure pour nous.
The start of the cave is slippery and hard to access. Better view at the exit of the cave. Walk felt shorter than stated. Recommend it.
Went there after being at castle rocks. Had a look at the cave entrance. Might go through it one day.
