Story

Established in 1971 and incorporated in 1973, the League is a registered charity dedicated to relieving pain and suffering in cats and kittens in Canterbury, New Zealand. We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome and help where we can.

The cattery is situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston, Christchurch and is open from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and from 11am to 2.30pm on Sunday and Tuesday to Friday. It is closed on Mondays.

Our office is situated at 14 Charlesworth Street, Woolston, is open from 10am to 4pm weekdays and can be contacted on 03-3766094 or by email [email protected]. Along with general advice our office provides the following services:

- We take in stray, abandoned and surrendered cats and kittens by way of a wait list although we assist in emergency situations as soon as possible.

- If your cat is unwell or injured we can assist with vet fees where cost is an issue, including allowing you to pay off treatment in some circumstances.

- We run a desexing programme called the Feline Fix where we try to get as many cats desexed as we can. Discounted and subsidised prices are available to community service card holders and people with a low income at 18 vets around Canterbury.

- We provide flea treatment and worm pills at $4 per treatment.

- We run a lost and found service. We encourage any pet owners who have lost their cat to list them on the facebook page Lost Cats Christchurch, Trade Me and www.petsonthenet.co.nz.

- We hire out trapping and holding cages. The fees are $5 for trapping cages and $10 for holding cages plus a refundable bond of $20.

We also have a second hand shop at 475 Worcester Street, Linwood where donated goods are sold. The shop is open from 10am to 4pm weekdays and can be contacted on 03-3899068 during those hours.

Hello! I've been meaning to write this for some time.. Beautiful Tigger! I adopted him from you on 10/06/2021. A six month old teen kitten called Kashi. He has beautiful stripes, so I renamed him Tigger after the A A Milne book, House at Pooh Corner. I was named Christopher Robin at birth, so it seemed like a good fit! I wanted a companion for my other rescue cat, Kura. She is 4 years old, and quite a princess! At first she didn't accept Tigger, but he won her over fairly quickly with his calmness and loving personality. You thought he could be a good match for Kura, and you were absolutely right! He's a sweet-natured cat, and now the two of them are happy and relaxed together. Not totally affectionate with each other, yet they're calm and relaxed, and there is a healthy respect for each other. Kura is still the boss and whacks him if he gets out of line! So happy Tigger came into our lives. He's a beautiful boy, just over a year old now and so sweet natured. Thank you for all you do. Photos of Tigger and Kura attached. Kind regards, Chris Stoneman
This is Cinders. Adopted on June 21st. A beautiful wee girl. Can be timid in unfamiliar situations. But very mischievous climbs pot plants and thinks the clothes horse is a jungle gym just for her. Spoilt but part of the family
Very helpful when I was trying to trap a stray to get it neutered. He's still here and has learned where his stomach gets filled. Can't get too close but he comes when I call him. That's progress
Absolutely amazing, super friendly staff, very accepting and accomadating, they had a very positive atmosphere and we're more then happy to help. We adopted our lovely baby from them who was known as Shadow and we now call her Celeste she is settling in perfectly and loves her new home Update: still amazing wanted to let you know Celeste is fully settled and is my best friend and every day with her fills me with so much love she is such a sweet girl.
Such a wonderful place, we just got our second cat from here and each time have been so impressed with the care, detail, handover and general communication. Thank you all for your hard work and especially Celia who helped us today ‍
This place is amazing! The staff were insanely friendly. They had so much knowledge in cats in general and especially the cats inside the cattery! The building was very nice, you can tell all of the cats are very well cared for. We adopted our cat, Watkins from here. He settled in at home so nicely and is very cuddly, sweet, curious and playful! Such a perfect cat, we were so lucky to find him <3
