About acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) - Acupuncture is based on TCM principles, & is a form of medicine that has been in use for over 3000 years. Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide range of conditions, and recent scientific research has validated its efficacy for many complaints.

According to TCM ill-health or disease is due to imbalance or disharmony rather than being seen as an isolated entity.

TCM is based on the concept of Yin & Yang, which are opposing but complimentary entities that include all phenomena in the universe. Day & night, Light & dark, hot and cold, winter and summer are all examples of Yin and Yang. When Yin and Yang are working in harmony, or are in balance in each person then good health results. If however, Yin and Yang become unbalanced then disease will develop.

Acupuncture is a holistic therapy because all aspects of a person's life including inherited constitution, diet, exercise, emotions, stress, physical environment, work, infection etc. are seen to influence that person's health and may be responsible for creating imbalance that can lead to the symptoms of disease.

Qi is an important aspect of TCM theory, and can loosely be translated as energy. Qi flows through each person's body and unimpeded Qi flow is important to maintain balance and good health.

If imbalance occurs, or if Qi doesn't flow smoothly then acupuncture, along with other therapies such as massage, herbal medicine, nutritional advice, and physical exercise that promotes Qi flow (such as Tai chi or Qi gong) can be used to correct any underlying imbalances & restore Yin and Yang to a state of harmony.

Acupuncture can be used to help many medical conditions and may be of benefit for most health concerns with which you may consult a GP.
It can be used safely alongside other medications, and is now routinely used alongside IVF treatment to aid implantation of the embryo and to help maintain a healthy pregnancy.
Acupuncture is useful for preconception care as it can help the body to be in a state of optimal health and balance to aid conception and maintain a healthy pregnancy.

Modern research has confirmed what the ancients knew, that acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment option for most health concerns.

What can I expect?
During the acupuncture session your acupuncturist will discuss your health concerns, ask questions, conduct pulse and tongue examinations to help identify your specific requirements.

Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles (about the width of a strand of hair) into carefully selected points on the body. The number of needles required depends on the complaint being treated and the constitution of the person being treated

Acupuncture needles are used once only and are packaged in sterile packaging. Needles are left in place for 20-30 minutes.

The number of sessions required depends on the complaint being treated.

Most people are surprised by how painless acupuncture can be; a feeling of heaviness, tingling or an electric sensation around the needle, or radiating from the affected area indicates that Qi is circulating and the body is returning to balance.

ACC covers part of your treatment cost if you sustained an injury due to an accident.
