Black sand beach within close walking distance to the popular Citadel Cafe and highly recommended campground and playground at the end of Rangiora Street. Plenty of parking and space to run the dog or kick a ball. Swimmin is recommended between the flags in front of the Pavillion where Surf guards patrol in the summer. Beware of the rips and undertow, stay safe.
This beach is so cool! It was too cold to swim when I went but the sand is BLACK. And there are so many interesting shells and pieces of wood lying around.
Great spot for a swim, fishing or a walk or just to kick back and sunbathe. Toilets and showers available. Life guards on duty in Summer. Great kids park and plenty of parking. Watch for dog poo, sharp drift wood and bloody hot black sand
Beautiful beach on the right day. Have been taking my children to this beach for year's now they take their own children here. Like any other body of water you have to ALWAYS keep a eye on your children to insure their safety.
A crazy amount of driftwood to pick your way through before getting to the water. Lifeguards were present, with a notice to only swim between the flags. I can see why, there was definitely a big undertow from the waves. The sand was black, not all that easy to wash off, luckily the was a wash point available by the parking area The beach went on for miles.
Cool parking spot. There are toilets and cold shower. Really nice sunset!!!
The beach has been groomed of it's usual drift wood. The sand of course is black iron sand, so footwear wise on a sunny day. Car parking available in three parking areas overlooking the seashore. Cold showers available just off the beach as well as the changing rooms. Surf Life Saving patrol the beach, so observe the flags for the patrolled beach area. Please avoid the rip off to the right of the beach.
Nice beach with crazy amount of driftwood
This place has its own climate and with the wharf/river facilities being upgraded will become more accessible. Keep the freaking vehicles off the beach tho
I've been freedom camping in our country I absolutely love this place I consider it to be part of my own only got one request for us please pick up your litter as it's part of my obligation to keep our country and Waters clean special thanks iwi and council
