Story

In 2003, Nathan Meyer flew to Italy on a business trip for a Mediterranean food supplier. For reasons he couldn’t explain at the time, he felt right at home there – a country he’d never visited before in his life. Its beauty, history, culture, food and wine, felt both exciting and familiar.

What Nathan discovered later was that Italy was the birthplace of his great great-grandfather. His name was Vincenzo Almao, and he was a millner born in Palermo Sicily who emigrated to Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1860.

Nathan’s trip to Italy came almost 150 years later. A former restauranteur and committed foodie, it wasn’t long before he tucked into a cone of gelato. It was love at first bite. Creamier and more intensely flavoured than the ice cream he was used to back home, the gelato also had less fat and sugar in it, and - because it was churned more slowly - less air. Nathan loved everything about it, from the taste and texture to the colour and presentation. He immediately began making plans to bring gelato back with him to New Zealand.

When he found out later about his great great-grandfather, Nathan realised what had happened. He explains it like this: the gelato had flirted with the Italian in him and he’d been unable to resist.

On his return, Nathan based himself in Newtown, Wellington, and went about gathering the best local and Italian ingredients for churning handmade batches of gelato. When it was ready, he built a ‘carrello’ or cart to sell it on the streets, and at events and festivals. Carrello debuted at Wellington’s Italian Festival in 2004. It was a hit.

Gelato was new to New Zealand, but it didn’t take long to catch on. Soon restaurants and other customers began asking where they could source Carrello for themselves. Nathan introduced five litre catering tubs, followed by one-litre retail tubs, and then began to experiment with different flavours.

In 2011, Carrello moved into single-serve tubs, and entered the New Zealand ice cream awards for the first time. It won Gold for its Mango Sorbetto.

In 2012, Carrello continues to be stocked by a growing number of wholesale and retail outlets throughout New Zealand, and the brand continues to grow. New packaging and an upgraded website are launched.

Delicious. Try the gelato burger, you won't be disappointed - or hungry for the next six hours.
Went looking for some gelato on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Noticed they closed at 5pm. Was there just before 4pm, looked hopeful. Doors were open, sign on door said open, plenty of gelato on offer. Told by lady on arrival ‘sorry we’re closed’. Either update your hours, or actually close your doors so customers aren’t left disappointed - simple really. Won’t be bothering with this place again.
Great gelato but extremely poor service. The guy behind counter looked he would rather not have a job, lacked general courtesy and slopped the ice cream on the waffle cone without any care
I haven't been back ever since my friend and I were served stale biscuits and given pepperoni slices, with one slice of pepperoni. When we mentioned it on the FB page, we were met with a rude and defensive response. When people ask me do I recommend this place I say no. Stick to selling gelato and making coffee, and the girls who work here are always polite and friendly, unfortunately the Italian male who tried to pass off the pizza as authentic, which it isn't as I have been trained by Italians to make pizza dough, you should be ashamed for making that kind of statement when you cannot back it up and also don't work in hospitality if you can't take responsibility for putting out food not fit for consumption.
Wow what an Absolutely Joke of a Dessert Burger for visawoap and totally overpriced to say the least the Burger was so boring & dry why did you even Enter ! I did the Cost pricing & it comes to around $5 or $6 then the markup added, it should've been sold at around $10.50c or $12 max. but still doesn't make the boring tasteless burger any more attractive !
Absolutely delicious array of sorbet and gelato, all of which are delicious. Decent sized, quality hot drinks. Some savory food served as well although I didn't try any. Definitely recommended as a fairly pricey treat.
Delicious iced coffee with choices of 2 different ice cream flavors included. Great selection of ice cream and Gelato flavors.
Awesome little place, very inviting and friendly. The fish and chips were the best I've had in a while. I would definitely recommend this to anyone for a nice simple meal
Good flavour options and loved sitting in the sun on a beanbag!
Lovely gelato for afternoon tea using 2-for1 Advent calendar treat
