When I arrived, the place was filthy. There was hair in the shower, crumbs all over the kitchen, and even dirty spots in the fridge. I complained to the RA, but she said that while it wasn’t clean, it was still livable, and that she would simply send an email to my flatmates asking them to clean it—which, of course, never happened.nnThe place is supposed to be cleaned by professionals before new people arrive, but since someone was already living there, that apparently meant no inspection was done over winter break. This is despite there being an inspection during Semester 2, where I failed even after thoroughly cleaning and being told the place was “livable” before I had even done any cleaning.nnNot only was I responsible for cleaning the dirty oven, microwave, and fridge—none of which I had made any mess in—but they also seemed unwilling to penalize my other flatmates or the previous residents in any way, leaving all the work to me. The worst part is that my roommate left for the summer and did nothing, which meant that, quote, “unfortunately everything will be up to you.” It feels as if this residence makes it easy for people to avoid responsibility. Shouldn’t they have to pay if they did nothing and I can prove it?nnI vacuumed and cleaned the fridge, shower, and toilet, staying up late after work because I had no help. On the day I moved out, they did the inspection—and guess what? I was made to look like I did a bad job cleaning because I didn’t clean junk under the ice bags in the freezer which I never used, dispose my roommates non-perishables which were there when I came before he arrived back from break, year-old stains in the shower, or dirty spots under the sink and on the shelves that I also had nothing to do with. All of these issues were from previous residents.nnBasically, I was used as free labor when a professional cleaner should have been hired before I moved in. I was expected to scrub every corner by myself despite arriving to a filthy place at the beginning of the semester. I am extremely disappointed and upset by this experience. I usually don’t write scathing reviews, but something must be done to ensure that exchange students like myself have a better experience in UoA accommodations.
I lived at Carlaw Park for a year. It is an amazing place to stay with free WiFi and laundry. The facilities in the common area were good. I liked the room in which I stayed. During spring and summer, It was nice to see the sunlight passing through the window to my room in the morning between 7 and 8 am. At Carlaw Park, I had the opportunity to experience living with people from different countries and it was amazing. To do the laundry, I had to wake up early as the machines get full at 8 am itself. The staffs there are good. There is a staff who was nice, kind and friendly with me. I appreciated the warm welcome from this staff, particularly the friendly smile that made me feel at home and I miss her. Overall, I recommend people who are coming to Auckland for the first time from a different country to experience staying at this place.
I used to live in here for almost one year. I would recommend it as a nice place to live, although it's bit expensive. It is spacious, quite in exam times. You can request for non-alcoholic or single-gender rooms, if you prefer to. Generally fee they charge includes all utilities, laundry and WiFi. So you don't have to worry too much on handling bills and providers. If you are an oversea student coming to NZ for first time, rather than renting a place from overseas, moving to the university accomodations and finding a place while you are here, is a good strategy.
A friend lives there. Well designed student hostels. Quite modern and high end for prospective students. On the hindsight, they are quite some distance from the city centre and is hilly heading to the cityvia the shortest route. Also quite expensive. About NZD 270 starting June 2018. Not worth it. Shared among 4 housemates.
My family and I checked into Carlaw for 2 nights. Nestled within University of Auckland. Utilitarian with basic cooking utensils provided. Basic accommodation with springy beds. Not easy to move luggage into apartment as there were many doors with security tags needed to access. Parking is super expensive. Would have considered a 'proper' accommodation if I had known earlier.
