Carey's Bay Historic Hotel
"Our beautiful Victorian stone building is situated on the banks of the Otago Harbour and is home to a fabulous seafood restaurant and traditional local pub.Pop in for a casual drink or book a table in our stone and glass conservatory.Casual diners are welcome but we always recommend reservations to avoid disappointment. Saturdays and Sundays are our busiest days.Evening restaurant closing time varies considerably so we always recommend calling ahead for dinner. The listed closing hours on Google are only an indication as we do not have a set closing time. The seafood restaurant will always be closed earlier than the bar but bar snacks are available until last drinks are called!"

So good we went back twice in a week! I absolutely loved the food here. The seafood platter is ridiculously good value for money, especially the large one. It has a bit of everything: fried battered fish, pan-fried fish, salt and pepper squid, mussels, clams, scallops, and ceviche. All delicious. I also had the shellfish bowl, which was mussels, clams and scallops cooked in a creamy broth, with a couple of pieces of bread and butter for soaking the sauce. I'd also recommend an extra cheese roll to dip or some chips to soak in it I'm weird, I know. On our second visit we also tried the chowder and that was excellent. 100% recommend, just so good! Go and then enjoy the resulting food coma!
What a delightful, unexpected find. We had the most amazing lunch of a shared seafood platter. The quality and selection was beautiful both in presentation and taste. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The wine and lemonade on tap were also very good Parking: Plenty of parking
Just had dinner here on New Year's Eve in a group of 4. The service was the best we have had in a long time. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was delicious. Couldn't recommend enough. Parking: Lots Dietary restrictions: Vegan and vegetarian
Wonderful place with awesome staff across from Carey Bay. Superb menu and curated wine and spirit list. So thankful for the care given by chef to separate vegan menu recipes. We started with entree of creamed eggplant, carrot, ginger soup. For mains, my wife had the battered & fried banana flowers and chips, and I had the vegetable green curry. We were very happy with our experience at Carey Bay Historic Hotel restaurant. Vegetarian options: Separate vegan menu. So grateful to see.Thank you Chef and Owners.
Fantastic fresh seafood, excellent local tap beers, and a warm fireside ambience on a snowy day. We spent a relaxing afternoon here and didn't want to leave. The seating and decor is comfortable and informal, but also has a luxurious feel and lots of historical accents.
We had the best service experience from the moment we walked into Carey's Bay Historic Hotel until we left. Receiving my tea in a teapot that poured perfectly on a silver tray with a beautiful tea cup and saucer; was a genuinely gorgeous surprise. All of the staff were enjoyable to talk to and took the time to be engaged in our conversation. The dedicated vegan menu was another aha moment, such yummy choices. I had jackfruit roti, and it was filling and tasty. I am looking forward to going there monthly.
The food was delicious but took over an hour to arrive. Server's were friendly but if you want more than one drink, you will need to get it yourself.
Best seafood I had in New Zealand. Highly recommend bluff oysters and seafood platter. Very cosy and beautiful outdoor dining and also kids friendly. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would see this is my favourite restaurant in New Zealand! Kid-friendliness: high chair available, kids meals available
A perennial favorite stopping point on this side of the bay, for us it is almost always after a morning spent exploring and taking in the birdlife at Orokonui which I also highly recommend. All the food is good but I recommend going strait for the fish because there are always two to three choices and each is good to excellent. Frequently there is a curry which is solid but it tends to be rather heavy. Seating is available indoors, on the enclosed patio, or out front looking towards the bay. Lovely place to stop.
Delicious fish and chips enjoyed by all of us. Fish cooked to perfection. Lovely atmosphere. It was busy and we were warned that it might take some time to get our meals. That was ok as we were in no rush.
