Cambridge Museum and Historical Society

About

Welcome to the Cambridge Historical Society. As well as running the local museum we love all things historical

Story

Located in the Old Courthouse in Victoria Street, the Cambridge Museum aims to preserve Cambridge's rich historical legacy for future generations. In the late 19th century, Cambridge residents started collecting items of local interest relating to historical research, pre-European settlement, and the development of Cambridge. The Museum now has a fine collection of artefacts and archival material including biographies, historical information on local businesses, clubs, people and societies, buildings information, land and property records, military records (particularly the 3rd Waikato Militia and WWI Cambridge soldiers), school records, family histories and a wealth of photographs, postcards and ephemera.

Mission

Our mission is to provide the Cambridge community with a record of their past as well as make a recording of the present for the future generations.

When I visit a city I try to find a local museum that tells the story about the local history. I have mixed feelings about this one. I loved the house, the different rooms, and thinking about all the people who may have spent time in them over the years. The artifacts though seemed to be just a random collection of items from the past 100 years or so that had no connection to Cambridge. It was neat to see them, but I didn’t walk out with any more knowledge about Cambridge than I did when I walked in. The £6 entry fee seemed OK on the way in but seemed a bit high afterwards. What I found even more annoying though while I was walking around were the “certificates of adoption” hanging on some of the items - they indicate that someone “adopted” the item and made a contribution. I doubt the money is being used to upkeep that specific item and they detracted from the item - and seemed to be more of a “look at me” thing.
A beautiful museum full of Cambridge and Cambridgeshire social history - including a glorious collection of folk magical bits and bobs ‍ A little gem in the heart of Cambridge!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A must go if you live in the city! I cycle past this museum every day and never really had a chance to visit until very recently. It was a weekday and I was positively surprised by the warm welcome from the staff. I learned that this lovely little museum is run by volunteers and tells the story of the town people, their lives and achievements. It certainly made me look at Cambridge with different eyes, and I really recommend a visit.
Took lots of pictures, but only posted the three. It was really interesting, the displays were placed really well. It was the best place we saw in Cambridge, and we walked around for hours. A definite must see!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
The museum is pretty and has a bit of history, but I think it doesn't worth the 6 pounds ticket when it's so small. I would have costed it 4 pounds maximum. It's nice to visit once, but I will not visit again.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A good small museum, well worth a visit. Was an old pub with lots of historic articles. Very friendly staff.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
As a historian, local museums never fails to intrigue me. Unlike other museums in town, which relate more to the University, this museum is about the town itself. I like the exhibition showcasing the life ordinary Cambridge residents lived throughout the past 300 years. The museum, including the building, the items on display and even the smell, make the history alive. You would learn a lot about the historical development of Cambridge shaped by its unique geographical features - the fens and the interaction between the gown and the town. But I agree with some other local guides that the ticket £5 for adults is pricey. Given the size and the niche focus of the museum, it is quite hard to compete with many other free museums in town. I think it might be a better strategy to make the access free, attract more visitors and get funded from donation and selling souvenirs.
Such a treat to stumble into, I only wish I had more time! It's an amazing collection of local curiosities, housed in an authentic 17th pub building. It tells the local narrative of Cambridge, and a breath of fresh air from the university story. Volunteer David was a true wealth of information and enthusiasm
