"The Buried Village is New Zealand's most visited archaeological site where stories of the 1886 Tarawera eruption come to life.Violent and unexpected, Tarawera's eruption was one of New Zealand's greatest natural disasters, destroying our country's very first tourist attraction- The Pink and White Terraces and burying this peaceful village of Te Wairoa.Today at the Buried Village you can experience the stories in our award winning museum, explore the Archaeological Site which once housed the people of Te Wairoa, encounter the unique insights of stories from our tour guides, and take the Waterfall Trail which showcases the stunning Te Wairoa Falls."

Amazing place to visit and bring the whole family! Our whole family was entertained and excited. There’s a lot of interesting history for you too look at! There’s a treasure hunt around the area, and at the end you get rewarded for your time! There’s also a massive waterfall that you get to look at take in!
Informative place. Easy walk around site even on a day that had rain spitting. Enjoyed it. Staff super friendly. Nice for them to do a Treasure Hunt for the kids which made the walk enjoyable and exciting for them
The ladies at reception counter were really helpful and nice really added to the experience. museum and village was informative.
Wonderful place for an adult's birthday "party". Staff arranged a good deal for entrance, coffee and afternoon tea, and allowed us to bring in a cake. Rain storm added to the experience and all guests happy Definitely will be back.
Well worth the visit. The museum is informative and the outside area is a fascinating snapshot of days past. Make sure you check out the waterfall!
Good information, beautiful surroundings. Well set out. The letters from Margaret really took you back to 1886
Really interesting place and the museum helps you understand events before you walk around the site. Knew about the eruption, but seeing the remains of the village and reading the stories made it real.
Cool place, not a lot of buried city to see however but very interesting and nice scenery.
What a beautiful spot to visit we walked through in an hour and enjoyed the kids treasure hunt along the way, history along a beautiful bush and stream walk.
