"Everybody needs somebunny sometimes!" :)
Recently located in Auckland, Bunny Bay Rabbitery is home to adorable Cashmere, Lop and "up-eared" bunnies.
WHERE I STARTED: My passion for rabbits started when a baby bunny turned up in my lounge as a surprise... She was so full of character and love, I wondered why I've never had a pet rabbit before! We got her sister a few days later so she would have a forever friend. So easy to care for and such quiet animals. The only negative... finding out a few months later that she was actually a he! Which explained his easy-going nature. He was soon off to the vet!
GENERAL CARE INFO: Rabbits happily live off pellets, hay and a fresh bowl of water, approximately costing $5 a week. Left-over fruit and vege is also a treat. Please note that citrus, apple PIPS and overindulgence in lettuce can be harmful and even fatal to your pet rabbit. If in doubt, google! :)
Rabbits love to have a buddy but only if they are not seen as a threat. Introducing rabbits at a later age or in either's territory can cause fights in which they'll harm each other. You can slowly introduce rabbits but it doesn't always work out and they must be supervised.
Bunnies need plenty of space to stretch, run and jump in their hutch. Keeping rabbits, who naturally run over 100KMs per day, in a small cage all day every day, is unstimulating which can result in behavioural and physical problems.
It's always hard to sex a rabbit when they are young. They become sexually mature around the age of 4 months in which they should be double checked either by your vet, pet store or DIY (with the help of internet information) if you have a pair of bunnies and are worried about inbreeding.
DO NOT breed spotted rabbits with other spotted rabbits. It can cause a disease called Megacolin within their kits. Spotted rabbits need to be bred with solid coloured rabbits.
Please leave me a message if you have any questions regarding your pet rabbit and I'll be happy to help :)
