Brahman Hills Farm is located just north of Auckland in Wellsford, where breeders Tom and Marie proudly raise a mixture of beef cattle on their 56 hectare beef farm, specialising in pure Brahman and mix breed Brahman bulls.
Marie and Tom started experimenting with Brahman crossbreeds over ten years ago. The couple where highly impressed by the many characteristics the crossbred (hybrid) Brahman cattle inherited from their Brahman parent, such as drought resistance, heat tolerance, disease and parasite resistance and increased longevity. They agree with their American breeding equivalents that Brahman females are maternal machines… with increased milk production, higher fertility, and the ability to wean faster-growing calves with fewer inputs. Brahman females also have a longer productive life, raising more calves over their lifetime than other breeds. Brahman crossbred/hybrid cattle remain healthier and make the most rapid, efficient gains while producing heavier, higher yielding carcasses that are free of excess fat, which today’s health-conscious consumer demand.
The couple’s first stock came from imported semen straws from Australia and the US, where a single straw can cost from $100 and $1000 depending on the bull’s pedigree. The first round of calves was very good and today Tom and Marie continue to improve their breeding program using artificial insemination from winning bloodlines.
Brahman Bulls are extremely popular on the Rodeo scene. The US has been breeding Brahman bucking bulls for generations and the imported semen will help improve NZ’s bucking bull stock overall. The couple are one of four farms in NZ specialising in breeding bucking stock from Brahman cattle. They believe the Brahman make better bucking bulls because of their natural athleticism.
Recently one of the awesome bulls breed on their Wellsford farm ‘Touchwood’ has been crowned NZRCA (New Zealand Rodeo Cowboys Association) Bucking Bull of the year 2013/14.
