Who would have thought you would be able to get decent Chinese food at a fish & chips shop?! The dishes were really tasty and above average. My favourite was the blue cod - cooked just right and it wasn’t rough at all. Fish and chips was tasty too, the owner said they used rice bran oil which does add a different taste into them. Unlike other reviews, service was friendly and we didn’t have to wait long for our dishes to come.
No wonder it’s the best in New Zealand! It definitely earns its name! The staff are really friendly. The food is amazing! Especially the Tarakihi fish. It’s a local fish and it’s super fresh! The potato wedges were out of the world!Recommended dishesSnapper, Seafood, Squid
During my family's 3 days stay in Rotorua, we went there to eat twice. Oppies was featured in a Taiwanese travel programme, and has gained many followers since. The Chinese menu is great, and even the fish and chips especially the fish is awesome!Food: 5/5
The deluxe platter was great, really good fish, juicy and tender. Best wedges I've had in my life, no joke.Food: 5/5
Must be New Zealand's well hidden secret restaurants serving southern and northern Chinese dishes. Amazing food, definitely worth a try. Limited seating, first in first served. Ask for the secret menu! Kid-friendliness: Families welcome
Foods are ok, but hygiene is a huge issue. Not only found human hair in our soup, but also many egg shells in our fried rice, picture below shows two chunky pieces that clearly indicates the problem . Did not ask for the refund because we are trying to support local business, I have informed issue to the owner when we finished the dining. Hope they can improve this situation.
The restaurant layout is interesting, except the lighting is a bit dim. The flavors are all good, and the heat of the fried food is well mastered. Especially the very good fish and chips, as well as a variety of other seafood, very suitable for children to have dinner here. We especially recommend seafood fried noodles, which can be said to be the best seafood fried noodles in New Zealand. The noodles are rich in flavor and the seafood is tender and juicy. Kid-friendliness: Very tasty fish and chips, as well as a variety of other seafood, great for kids to have dinner here.
Service was okay, food took some time to come but understandable as it was somewhat busy. Unsure why it would be busy though as the food was not worth the price. Fries and wedges were soggy, prawns and oysters were meh, chili chicken was pretty shocking and snapper could have been nicer. None of the food was worth the hype and I really don't know how they are the best fish and chips shop in NZ. Would not return sorry
I would not recommend this place. I think the food is way too overpriced for the quality they give you. I ordered twice from here before. I ordered the fish burger from here and I did not enjoy it. The burger just fell apart and I didn’t really like the fish. The second time I ordered from here, I got a wonton soup which was not that good. They give you a small portion for an expensive price and the wontons fell apart so you were pretty much just eating wonton wrappings and the meat separately. They also don’t give much meat or veggie with the soup. Not happy about it. Waste of money.
Wasn’t good. We normally love going here before we make our way back to Auckland but after of todays experience, will not go back again. Spent almost $200. Spicy chicken was mostly batter, bought $17 worth of squid that nearly fit in the palm of my hand, chips were average and the bbq pork crispy fried rice was rice with sprinkles of pork. When we asked for bowls to put food in for our 5 little kids they gave us 1 and ignored us when we ask for a couple more. We felt rushed, unwelcome and uncomfortable. Ended up going to Burger King down the road when we had to spend another $200 cause we were all still hungry.
