Steve created these two beautiful bespoke pieces for my wife and I to offer to each other as anniversary gifts. We had some very specific requests and Steve was amazing about making sure they were both just right and we truly couldn't be happier with the results. Even if you can't make it to the shop for a carving workshop which you definitely should do if you can Steve will take orders online and mail commissions to anywhere in NZ. 11/10 can not recommend highly enough!
Loved my first green stone making experience! Didn’t expect to enjoy the process this much and really happy with the final outcome as well. The instruction was helpful and patient, staff are friendly and cool, really learned a lot and had fun!
Husband and I drove from Christchurch to Hokitika especially for this experience with the added bonus of the beautiful scenic drive and town whilst on holiday from Australia. Can honestly say it was not what I expected....it was so much more! Steve is patient and helpful, with so much skills he tries to share to help you achieve your vision. I was so surprised at what I achieved and very thankful as it was a piece I made for my husband. Our friends were so impressed that it has already been planned to go for our next group New Zealand trip! Thanks Steve, for the experience and your company
I can't thank Steven enough for this experience. We paid for 2 jade carving lessons and it was worth every cent. We spent hours learning about mouri culture, greenstone, Steven and carving. We loved every minute and were incredibly happy with the result. I would say make sure you chose a simple design as there is a lot to learn but 100% of the time was a pleasure.
My Wife and I were the only ones in our afternoon session. Starting at 12 we were given plenty of resources for inspiration to decide on what we wanted to carve. We both decided to make our own designs. Once we had the designs hashed out, we chose our bone and started the carving process! At the beginning we were both nervous. Not only was this the first time we had ever done anything like this, but we were both making something special for each other. Enter Steve, with his Banana cake to instantly make us feel oh so comfortable and give us encouragement and guidance to follow the designs that we wanted, and the expertise to realise them! With Steve's patience, understanding, knowledge and experience we had an amazingly fun time making our necklaces! We really can't thank him enough for making our experience such an enjoyable and relaxed one. Thank you. We will be back!
For a long time now Ange and I have been planning to gift each other Pounamu taonga to wear. We had been waiting to visit Hokitika knowing that our taonga were there waiting for us. We weren't disappointed. We visited the shops that had pounamu that were open, including Bonz n Stonz. We were directed back to Bonz n Stonz by another shop and by my own gut feeling. This time we spoke to Steve and Katene. I told them my story. Immediately Steve showed me a piece and Katene went to his house to bring me a piece he wanted me to look at. We agreed on a piece. Ange saw a piece that she really liked. Katene Immediately went to work and added designs to both our pieces which mirrored each other. Fantastic. Because of my special work in the community Steve gifted a special piece to me, a mauri stone which on essence binds and animates all things in the physical world. Stonz n Bonz is real. Steve and Katene will help you choose your special taonga with sincerity, humility and grace. Steve and Katene, you are very special people. To all people in New Zealand and/or visiting Hokitika searching for the 'one off' special taonga treasure pop in and see Steve and Katene. You can even carve your own piece with their help. No reira, tena korua nga matua.
Came here three times in one day. It's the only stone shop in the area that doesn't have that tacky touristy vibe. I bought a beautiful necklace that I haven't taken off since. The lady working at the front desk was very lovely and friendly to us, helping us identify pounamu vs the plain rocks I bought in lollll. Highly recommend this place for kiwis passing through looking for a more authentic experience

Highly recommend! My family had a wonderful time carving jade. The staff was extremely helpful and polite, and everyone was able to make exactly what they wanted.
