We took the 8:15am Bluebridge Ferry service from Wellington to Picton a week ago. As tourists staying in Wellinton itself, it was convenient to get to the Bluebridge ferry terminal which was close to the city center itself I think the other ferry service operates from a terminal that is further away.nnWe were walk-on passengers i.e. no vehicle so I can't comment too much on the vehicle on-boarding/off-boarding process but it appeared to be orderly.nnOur check in and the trip was comfortable and smooth. Great views! Good options for food and comfortable chairs. Lots of space on our trip across.nnThe only thing that prevented a 5-star review was the bus connection service to Picton town when we arrived. The bus wasn't fit for purpose in that it was a regular passenger bus and there was no dedicated luggage space. All luggage had to be carried on to the bus and there was no method to secure the bags. Some passengers were struggling to hold-on to their wheeled bags as the bus made the albeit short trip into Picton.nnA 20kg+ runaway bag could have cause some serious injuries. Thankfully that didn't happen but perhaps this needs to be reviewed.
We caught the Connemara to Picton, and Livya returning back to to Wellington with perfect conditions both ways, which made the sailing great.nAll front line staff we had were friendly, concise and efficient.nFollow what these guys tell you and everything is a breeze, you don't even need to think..nFood availability can be hit or miss, but there is always something to grab.nI would note that neither of these boats are super child friendly, but they do supply a small child's area on both which does the job, as long as there aren't to many kids aboard.
While interislander was breaking down we happily and smoothly got to Picton and back to Wellington with no problems. Crew were amazing. So easy to drive on and off. The layout well marked out clearly since posted. Staff there to help.
Bluebridge Cook Strait Ferries provide a very efficient RORO service for both passenger vehicles and freight transport. Weather permitting, it is usually a smooth sailing, if a bit windy out in the straits. 3.5 hours normally for the crossing, add half an hour to each side for loading and unloading. Comfortable facilities on board with access to food and drink too. Fre and pay seating options depending on your choice. Always busy with traffic from North to South and South to North. If you want to explore both islands by car, van or truck, the ferry is a must. Only 2 competitors on this route, so not competitive. Prices are high regardless of season.
A unique and amazing experience — very enjoyable! I expected it to be more difficult or scary, but the trip was smooth, safe, and really pleasant.nThe ferry is the main means of transportation between New Zealand’s two main islands. It’s spacious and large enough to carry a big number of cars and passengers.nIt also includes restaurants and a coffee shop.nnNote: Unfortunately, we were not able to find halal food.
