Former student here, hated every last second at that school, if you can even call it a school. They do not care about education, they just focus on sports. They do not prepare you well for high school at all. I feel I have learned nothing at BBI, and I had more potential that BBI crushed. If I could rate it 0 stars, I would. Whenever I was at the school, it felt like walking on eggshells. The smallest things could get you into trouble/detention. It felt like a prison/bootcamp and that they were preparing you for some fancy boarding school. Not education-wise, but just from their stupid rules. First of all, the star system is rigged, they just give stars to the more 'popular' and sporty kids. It's clear they play favorites, and that they don't care about kids' true abilities. The counselling system is the worst. They do not help, and only see you like once a month. In my opinion, counselling just wasted my time. The school clearly doesn't care about mental health, and just wants kids to be mindless obedient zombies. They do not care about bullying at all, and focus their problems on other issues. Like Mrs. Wong telling me I had 'problems at home' and gave me a detention for wearing black shorts with BARELY visible stars sowed on them. I also got kicked out of the bathrooms and was forced to use the hall toilets, even though I had done nothing wrong. It's humiliating having to walk all the way down there just to change into PE gear or to use the bathroom. Being separated from everyone else made me feel like some sort of freak. When someone makes an accusation about you, and you deny it, even if it isn't true the teachers take the side of the accuser, even with no proof. They also tend to take the side of the child who is more 'popular'. It is incredibly hard to make friends at that school, and teachers just deny all the issues that happen, like kids vaping, bullying, etc. They do not even try to listen to kids that complain about issues like that, they just stall and ignore them.
Aight bro so firstly pe was a disaster. Fitness in shorts and a t shirt in 8 degrees is craziness. Feel bad for some students as they had it worse than most of us because of DISCRIMINATION. I attended this monstrosity of a educational program and absolutely despised my experience. I hope that Mr malins leaves and the students have a better experience as we, former year 8, did not. And also, do a few more checks on staff because some of them didn't know that being nice is a thing. Thank you so so much for holding me in place as I will never forget my time at BBI. Overall, didn't mind as many teachers didn't pay much attention, and my time here was just fun no work.
Blockhouse Bay intermediate is recommended to parents looking for a school for there child because they are excellent at keeping their students fit and healthy for example fitness including Block run, Track attack, move and grove, and much more. The school has great facilities and great teachers. The only reason people are giving this school bad ratings is because they are lazy and are too unfit to do cross-country and fitness!. There are multiple opportunities to sign up for and lots of inter-class sports throughout the term so your kid can get involved in a lot of sports. Blockhouse Bay intermediate keeps their school clean and tidy, and makes sure there are no rubbish lying around the school. There is one playground at blockhouse Bay intermediate and it is in perfect condition and very safe and sturdy equipment. Blockhouse bay intermediate is a safe place with beautiful nature and a great place for a high level of top of the country education. The school looks great and is in good conditions with no graffiti and a good looking environment ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- King Regards Wil Pilkington
During my time at Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School, I encountered several concerning practices that I feel compelled to address. Firstly, disciplinary measures seemed disproportionately harsh for minor infractions. I vividly recall receiving a detention for the innocuous act of wearing a beanie within school grounds, a matter that could have been rectified with a simple request for compliance with uniform regulations. The experience of receiving a detention for a minor infraction, such as forgetting to remove my beanie, left me feeling marginalized and "otherized." Being penalized alongside what one might consider "real" offenders compounded this sense of injustice. It's staggering to think that they believed a seemingly insignificant oversight could really impact one's entire life trajectory. Spoiler Alert: It DOESN'T Such antiquated disciplinary practices are reminiscent of conservative bureaucratic methods better suited to a bygone era. The stringent enforcement of trivial rules, akin to those prevailing in the 90s, fails to acknowledge the evolving dynamics of educational environments. Secondly, the restricted access to bathroom facilities during breaks and class time was a notable inconvenience. The limited window for restroom use often resulted in unnecessary discomfort for students, as accessing facilities was only permitted at the onset of breaks. Furthermore, there appeared to be a pervasive atmosphere of distrust and antagonism towards students. The imposition of punitive measures for minor transgressions fostered an environment where students felt constantly scrutinized and unsupported. The implementation of a hierarchical star system, ostensibly meant to recognize academic achievement, served primarily to perpetuate social divisions and stigmatize certain students. Regrettably, the quality of education provided fell short of expectations. Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School failed to adequately prepare students for the transition to high school, with a curriculum that lacked depth and efficacy. While I cherish fond memories of friendship with peers, I must underscore that these were not fostered by the institution itself, but rather emerged independently of its influence. In summary, I caution prospective students and parents against choosing Blockhouse Bay Intermediate School if seeking an environment conducive to respectful treatment, academic enrichment, and holistic student development. My intention in sharing this review is not rooted in disdain for educational institutions, but rather a desire to highlight deficiencies that hinder the realization of a supportive and nurturing learning environment. I should also add, they've censored not ONE but TWO reviews of this calibre in the past... really goes to show. I already wrote this review on another account, but the apparent failure of the school to ADDRESS it, has lead me to repost this again, but using more PROFESSIONAL language so that hopefully they take my review into deeper consideration.
The sports range around the schools term are excellent that go through a range of Māori and Other cultural games, With a variety of sports such as [Koko,Non stop cricket, Grenade and tapu wai] happens every term and has a normal change Normal 1-3 P.E lessons and some times Whanau sports Family class groups and many learning based classes such as [Science,Hard tech building, dance and drama,Music,Art,Mandarin and cooking A reading competition that is fun and challenges a student to strive to the best of their reading capabilities, Fair and cultural respects that don’t attack or offend a cultural person to a specific group, Bully’s are dealt with and the student that is attacked is always free to tell a teacher, People have always included others even if they didn’t know them, There a room called the ponamu room and it’s for kids who have freshly arrived from a new country and is finding it hard to understand certain words and game so they help them, And every week a student from each class gets a red or blue star the starts have meanings Blue=sports Red=Academic Green=Service yellow=Cultural I would highly recommend this school for any whanau who are looking for a close and nice intermediate -Great time looking forward to telling my family about this wonderful school and to persuade them to get their child the best learning possible
Some of the rules at this school feel like they were trying to prepare us for boarding school instead of a suburban high school. They also just stopped doing certain things that they had been doing when my sister went to this school for some reason. I went here during the 2 years of covid lockdowns though so I guess that could've been a reason? Still you could've done them when we were at school. At least I made good friends there and the teachers were pretty good. Also watch out for Block Run and Track Attack during morning fitness, plus Cross Country and the Beep Tests scattered throughout the year if you're more of an academic kid like I was and still am.
the only thing good was friends and some teachers but other than that its a nono a lot of ppl say the n word freely and vape in the bathrooms, ppl leave gum and draw inapropriate stuff EVERYWHERE, some of the staff are really mean and wouldn't help in any situation. also watch out for block run and cross country beep test wasn't that bad but some teachers are really nice Mr Park, Mrs Cheuh made a lot of friends there so im giving it 3 stars
The students at the school say the n word freely and the teachers do not care. Also it seems like the principal does not care what happens at school and lets the deputy principal handle everything by blaming the students and giving people detention. The good stuff I like about this school is how much sports they do like fitness and athletics.
Terrible school. Seemed very sports focused so weren't much interested if you didnt fit in with being sports mad. Loved backing up the bullies and rewarding them with a ridiculous award to further make the other kids feel bad. No feedback to parents if bullying happening as it does here often. I shudder when I drive past the place it brings back 2 years of sadness. Please dont send a sensitive non sporting child here as they get a hard time.
Went here 20 years ago and this school has given me life long issues. Wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy. Also I had no star awards the whole time I was there but my bullies got them. I DID NOTHING WRONG!!!! I was a good kid. I also knew someone else who was bullied here but he is sadly no longer with us. DO NOT SEND YOUR KIDS HERE
