Very inflexible/rigid service. Extremely disappointing experience. Context: The establishment is split into 3 areas; wine tasting outdoor, indoor in the middle splitting the two outdoor area, and lunch another outdoor area. 4 of us wanted to order wine tasting for 2 pax & the lunch menu to share amongst us however the staff said this was not possible to facilitate as wine tasting and lunch diners have to be separated didn’t give us any reason why. We wanted to sit together to enjoy the experience as a group. However, they insist on splitting us into 2 groups; 2 in the wine tasting area to complete wine tasting session before rejoining the other two in the lunch area who were not drinking. Worth noting, all 3 areas were not at full capacity and the indoor area was completely empty understandable if they can’t accommodate us in that area IF they were preparing for dinner service but we arrived at 1pm!. Yes, the 2 non-drinkers could have waited for us to finish drinks before all of us have lunch together but we would have spent too much time at 1 vineyard. They do have a mini snack menu to go with the wine tasting session but it was mainly dry finger food biscuit, cheese etc. which we aren’t keen. We ended up going to another vineyard that was able to provide wine tasting and food service together which ended up being a great decision with a bigger variety of wine selection, delicious food and value for money. Will not recommend this vineyard if you are going there to have wine & food together. Wine & snack would be fine although we didn’t stayed long enough to try either.
It’s our first time to Hawkes Bay winery and Black barn was a big disappointment right at the door. The waitress service was cold, rude and shamelessly just pushing us away giving false impression that the outdoor is closed, they’re fully booked for dinner which was the time we arrived and that they were taking no walk-ins or reservations. The restaurant was 95% empty and it was 10 mins shy from dinner hour. Was it because we are asians? Or the fact that we have kids that wanted to dine with us parents? If you’re not open for kids or selective diners, please put in on your website or right at the front of your establishment. First and last time here for sure. This type of hospitality is uncalled for. I would 100% not recommend this place.
This was our first visit since the restaurant rebuild. The previous dinning experience was excellent however this most recent was most disappointing. The venue is still lovely and service good. The 2020 syrah was perfect. However, we had the wild venison loin dish, which was very disappointing. For its price it was a very small meal. Two slices of meat with garlic shoots which were clearly for decoration. This dish could have included a couple of small broccoli and potatoes. The burnt carrot dish was delicious. All things considered, we unfortunately won't be in a hurry to return.
We ve visited several wineries all across the world Argentina, France , Itály , South africa and the people working at black barn dont seeem to be happy or willing to show the wines they produce. As a client se felt as we were bothering in asking questions, etc. The place is very nice but clearly not well exploited as tasting customers only have a few reserved tables where they can sit, and the best tables are reserved for the empty restaurant.
We popped in for a wine tasting on our cycle tour of Hawkes Bay. We were lucky enough to have the lovely Paula guide us through the 5 delicious wines, the experience felt like we had popped in for a cup of tea with an old friend and we were touched by the friendliness and authenticity she showed us, she even sorted moving our lunch reservation elsewhere back as we spent so long chatting and enjoying the wines. Will be back someday!
Visited this place with a group of friends for some wine and food, only to found out the restaurant is closed and can only provide wine and entrees for sittings outside. When I was ordering, I have encountered a very rude staff who gave us annoyance attitude when we decided to change our order that included canceling a plate, this was all before we have paid. While placing order, me and my partner decided we don’t want one of the plate and want to order something else instead, the staff sighed loudly in annoyance and stormed off to tell kitchen to cancel the order, even we have said to her if it’s that much of a hassle to cancel we will just have it, but she ignored our wishes and stormed off to tell the kitchen to cancel just to prove that she is annoyed at us. I would like to raise the question, that why, was the order confirmed to the kitchen before we even get to pay? Another incidence is when the food was served to us by the same staff, she did not remember which table/order number she was serving food to, this was very confusing because people come in as a group may order separately for themselves and food is not always for the whole table to share, it is important and basic understanding in hospitality for the staff to deliver food to the right customer, it is not a very hard thing to do but was failed by this particular staff. I have piece of advice for this staff, instead of learning be a wine connoisseur, maybe you should learn some basic manners instead? Food was lower than average, wine was also very average, regretful visit and would not recommend unless you want an unpleasant dining experience.
The worst event venue I have ever attended! Went to see Bicep play and they were the only saving grace. No mention that it's a cash bar. The line to get cash out was 30min long. Only one bar and the line literally went to the back of the festival to get 4 drinks limit another 30 min wait! The toilets were so limited, needed 3x more than what was provided, that was another 30 min wait to pee. The sound system was horrendous. We were sitting on the terraces and heard nothing. Went down to dance by the stage to get a better vibe and there was none to be found.. bad speakers even right at the front. There was no line up listed. We had no idea who was playing and what times. Who does that?! Only saw one water station and it was soo poorly marked that no one could find it. Never coming to a gig here ever again. Unless all the above is improved.
Black Barn Winery offers an exceptional experience with its breathtaking location, friendly staff, and absolutely incredible food. The combination of these elements makes it a must-visit destination. We can't wait to return for another delightful experience!Rooms: 5/5
Went to Bicep a few days ago. Worst live music experience of my many years. Bicep were good I think . Sound system was toilet. Toilets were too few. Beer was warm. Cash only and 30-40 minutes wait for cash out. Overpriced nonsense. The warm up DJs were HORRIBLE. 110 bucks I think not. Do yourself a favour don’t go to a gig here. Dance round your UE-boom. You’ll have a better night. TRASH. Black barn you should be ashamed and giving a refund.
If there's an event here then you should avoid it like the plague. Bicep was incredible in despite of the absolutely appalling lack of planning done by the venue. Not enough toilets, no communication there was only a cash bar until after the event had started and clearly no care given to the set up. They even scammed us on tix for a bus to pick us up prior that never turned up. Trash. Do better.
