As part of the Kahui Ako tamariki in years 4-6 completed a Wellness at School SurveyW@S through the New Zealand Centre for Educational Research NZCER. Pleasingly the highest scoring sections were Safe School, Caring Teaching, Caring Learning and Home School Partnerships.nnAlso pleasing, however not surprising, was a significantly low score on Aggressive School Culture.nnSample statements/questions students were given:nSafe SchoolnI feel safe at schoolnBehaviours like hitting or bullying are not OK at schoolnCaring TeachingnTeachers think all students can do wellnTeachers treat all students fairlynTeachers care about how I feelnTeachers always take action if someone is being hit or bulliednCaring LearningnAt school, I learn to think about other children’s feelingsnAt school, I learn it is OK to be different from other childrennAt school, I learn what behaviours are OK and not OKnHome School PartnershipsnTeachers and parents work togethernOutside school I have a parent or adult I can go to if I am upsetnMy parents, family and whānau always feel welcome at schoolnAggressive School CulturenAre you bullied by other students?nDo other students threaten you in a mean way or force you to do things?nDo other students say mean things about your culture or family?nnWellbeing and hauora are not only acknowledged at school but taught through programmes such as Circle Time, Council meetings, Pause Breathe Smile and through the school four values, house points and classroom Ka pai slips Puna and Korowai Kokoru.
Great school with caring teachers and a wonderful community of parents.nFor us it was important that the school teaches the kids the love of learning. The Bayswater Primary has most definitely accomplished this.nDespite no home work both kids are progressing really well. They are also learning great values and positive behaviours.nVery happy with our choice and highly recommend this school to anyone in the area.
We love Bayswater School! Firstly, because of the welcoming school community. From the Matariki festival, to chats outside the classroom, we’ve felt welcomed with open arms into this diverse and caring community. Secondly, because of the Bayswater teachers and their commitment to our kids. The wonderful teachers have helped our son with everything from navigating friendships, to finding a way to hook him into a love for reading. Thirdly, the teaching approach is excellent. There’s strong evidence showing that student-lead learning works better for more kids than traditional teaching.
A small school with a big heart! My children are thriving at Bayswater School. The teachers are so caring and work so hard to create an environment that caters to individual learning needs/styles and ensures every child is given the best start to their schooling. I love the fact that diversity is celebrated and the genuine sense of community. The highlight of the annual calendar is the Matariki Festival, which encapsulates the school's ethos.
Amazing education for children! The teachers seem really kind and caring and the scenery too! This place is just amazing.
