A small shop cum restaurant cum cafe on highway 6 in South Island, NZ, around a 45 minute drive from Queenstown, the Athol shop is the hang out of the locals in Athol. It’s a warm large cafe cum pub cum bakery - it’s the heart of this village of 87 people. Great company, good homely food and good coffee, beer and wine . Do stop and visit if you want to spend a few minutes of warmth.
I cannot begin to express how awesomely delicious the food is here. We tried the beef, chicken and breakfast hoagie, all incredible. Unfortunately they sold out of pork when we visited. We stopped by once on our way to Milford sounds and stopped by again on the way back to Queenstown because it was just so good. Please do yourself a favour and stop by here.
This small countryside gem just off the main road through Athol on the road to Queenstown has the most incredible bbq chicken and smoked brisket hoagies, and that’s said coming from a group of Americans! Our group of 5 all loved their sandwiches, the meat was so tasty and succulent, and the roll was the perfect size for a lunch. Lovely outdoor covered picnic table seating right next to the smoker! Great iced latte, smoothie and butterscotch brownie too. We cannot recommend this enough, very kind staff as well! A must stop for breakfast or lunch. Also definitely check out the cute emporium shop next door!
If you're ever passing through Athol, plan a stop for an excellent American style bbq feed! Friendly staff, warm and rustic farm house style venue with an amazing value for money feed. $89 for 4 meats and 4 sides was a great deal. Will definitely be back if we're passing through again.
Quaint pit stop with really really good coffee. The smell of the slow BBQ and firewood was heavenly. Clean bathroom and beautiful outdoor dining area.
