Askerne Winery
"Askerne Estate Winery is a small boutique family-owned business that was established in 1993 by John and Kathryn Loughlin, who remain the owners today. Askerne makes all its wines from a single 20 hectare vineyard near Havelock North. Much of the vineyard is old Tuki Tuki River bed that was reclaimed from the river following the 1931 Napier Earthquake. The site has six different soils, predominantly river silts, sands and gravels. Askerne vineyard is located approximately three kilometres from the coast and the maritime influences on its climate reflect in our wines. Askerne is well known for its aromatic white wines and Chardonnay, but has also had significant success with red and dessert wines."

Loved our pop in visit to taste some wines. The staff were lovely. The wines were superb. We didn't try it, but the "make your own picnic basket" definitely looks worth a try.
What a great place for wine and food. This place has such a wide great selection of wines. They have so much choice of food to put together a platter. Now they have renovated they have shelter from the whether too.
So friendly and knowledgeable. Excellent wines. Part of okay2stay. You can purchase snacks to go with your wine. Beautiful rose, white and red. Lovely location.
What a beautiful winery. We literally had the whole place to ourselves when we came on a weekday but even if there were other people around it would've also been enjoyable. It's spaced out well so there's plenty of space and you can also bring a picnic blanket to sit on the ground with some shade provided by the trees. It's a lovely set up, so you grab a basket and you pick what you want to have. They have a wide range of chutneys, spreads, olives and crackers. They also have fridges which has pates, cold meats, different variety of cheeses and hummus. Then there's another fridge of wine, beer and cider and non alcoholic drinks. Very good value for money, I would say it is even cheaper than getting a cheese board on some of the vineyards I've visited. Overall its a fun way to build your own cheeseboard, choosing what you want to eat. We spent almost 3 hours there. A place we would return to again when we come back in Napier. Staff are also friendly and accommodating :.
Gideon is an amazing host and very knowledgeable about wines. This was our first stop on our grapeescape tour and was by far the best. We tried about 11 different wines and were quizzed on what foods they may be paired and where the grape may have originated from. Great place to try wines and overall very entertaining. We liked most of the wines but ended up with only the Gewürztraminer! Which especially nice! Would definitely recommend a visit here!
Fantastic little family winery with a novel 'choose your own platter' idea. They have a great assortment of cheeses, cold meat, crackers, fresh bread, condiments etc, that you choose and pay for before you sit down for your tasting or you can just buy a glass or bottle and have a picnic on the grounds. They have all of the crockery, cutlery, boards and platters you need as well a picnic blankets and cute baskets to carry it all in. They have really thought of everything. On top of all of that, they have an awesome selection of well priced wines to taste. The family were all super friendly and really helpful. We had the best time. Thanks Askerne Estate.
Amazing wine. They have a small cheese/gift shop so you can grab something to picnic with. Free tastings and no purchase necessary although you’ll probably want to. Beautiful dessert wines especially the Cabernet based one. We didn’t have much time here but it was well worth the stop!
I had a fantastic time at Askerne, we went for a wine tasting and were walked through a great range of wines all of which were individual and delicious. The staff were great. Highly recommend and would definitely go again.

Fantastic relaxed winery, informative tastings of some delicious wines. Had a picnic while there from their selection of snacky items all of which were amazing. 100% recommend if you're looking for a more relaxed winery visit. Andy was particularly knowledgeable and helpful.
