Archives Central a shared service provided by MWLASS Ltd, a joint venture established by eight district, regional and city councils.
Archives Central is a joint database for the archives of most of the local authorities in the Horizons region – Wanganui District Council, Rangitikei District Council, Manawatu District Council, Palmerston North City Council, Tararua District Council, Horowhenua District Council and Horizons Regional Council. Archives from all participating councils will be systematically listed and added to the database during 2011 and 2012.
This facility is being managed and run by Manawatu-Wanganui Local Authority Shared Services Ltd (MW LASS Ltd).
At Archives Central you can find listings of the archives of the former local authorities of the Horizons region. This includes many of the former borough councils, county councils, catchment boards, drainage boards and rabbit boards that once operated within the current regional boundaries.
The archives can include:
• Minute books and other meeting papers
• Correspondence files
• Rate books and valuation rolls
• Maps and plans
• Town planning records
• Permit and licence records
• Electoral rolls
• Photographs (including aerials)
• Accounts records
• Employee records
• Bylaws
Please note that even as the listings come online for each council, they won’t necessarily be a complete listing of all archives of the council. There are still unlisted and unprocessed archives held at each council which will be gradually listed and added to the database.
