What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics uses the water that fish are raised in to fertilise plants that are grown in deep water troughs. Fish, living in a tank, go about their natural business, breathing through their gills and a pooping and a peeing in the water just like all other natural living creatures. Very quickly ammonia begins to build up in the water and if not treated, will actually kill the fish.

This is where Mother Nature steps in and through natural nitrifying bacteria that exist all around us, the ammonia is converted to ammonium nitrite, a solution that is still toxic to fish. Mother Nature to the rescue again as further naturally occurring bacteria change the ammonium nitrite to ammonium nitrate. Now we have a wonderful plant food that vegetables absolutely thrive on.

You can see that this is a very delicate, totally natural process and that the use of any artificial fertilisers, chemicals or bug sprays will kill all the fish and wreck the whole process.
