We stayed one night on March 11, 2023. The Hermitage exceeded our expectations in many ways. If you are after a magical place to stay, this should not let you down. 10/10 While we were in a line waiting to be checked in, an Indian lady staff chatted with us for around 5-10 minutes just to keep us accompanied, what a welcoming gesture and heart warming thing to have after we had our exhausting hike through the valley track. Our room was just a standard king, which is on the 1st floor level 2 of the older building. The view is certainly superb for us, and out of our surprise the room was definitely also very spacious and clean, not like many other reviewers had said otherwise. I think they were comparing this hotel to other luxury boutique hotels, but this hotel is not about luxury nor personalized services, it’s about the view and the ability to appreciate the sacred mountains of Aorangi/Mt Cook to the Māori people and Kiwis. We had the buffet breakfast at the hotel as well, the food selection was superb too. Starting a day with the food and the blue sky, snow covered mountains was really magical. The only thing we hope can improve is the price : Before the pandemic we could get a premium room for a similar price as we paid for our standard room this time around. The Hermitage exceeded our expectations in many ways. If you are after a magical place to stay in this area, this hotel should not let you down. Thanks Hermitage for giving us a magical and memorable stay.
The location and the view was amazing. The service was great. Room was a bit tiny and bathroom slightly tiny. Recommend - get the breakfast and bed package which gives you 10% off because there’s no real other options for breakfast unless you plan to skip a meal. Breakfast was ok but not huge variety. We stayed 2 nights and both days breakfast on offer was the same. The coffee machine was a bit average. For dinner we did just one night buffet. Price is definitely a bit pricey for value but again no real other options unless you travel out of town. I found variety was better for dinner compared to breakfast. Overall a good stay with amazing views. We always got the window seats when we went to the restaurant.
The Hotel and it's Motels are pretty nice and do have the great views most reviews mention. Staff have also all been helpful and friendly. The food is the main problem here: with a virtual monopoly, the quality is so-so and definitely overpriced. The dining area seating also seems to have a lot of food stains that I wouldn't normally care about until required to pay $65 a person to eat there. So buy groceries before driving up!
Highly recommended! July 2020 was my first stay with group of friends. June 15 2023: Second stay with my sister. It was short but sweet stay. Room was warm, clean and good for 2 persons. They accommodated my request. Location and view was great. Accesible to the walks. Food was good. They have Cafe til 4pm and they have buffet breakfast and dinner. Staff are all very friendly, professional and courteous. They have parking. They are also renovating the back part building of the hotel. And that's promising.
Disappointing stay for the price. The hotel and rooms are very dated and definitely not worth the price. Firstly we waited 2 hours to be checked in, as their check in time is later than usual at 3pm, we got our room around 4pm but the bed type was not as per requested so there was further delay. The staff including the hotel manager did not offer any service recovery. Dining options are limited and average, we had the buffet dinner, and breakfast at the cafe. The pictures are better than the actual hotel offering, not recommended unless you want to stay in Mount Cook.
Hotel itself is a little bit disappointing, for the price you pay it was a let down. The reception area of course is stunning, you then go down a long corridor to be meet with a very basic room, despite paying $600 for one night. Outside the plants and weeds looked terrible, needed a good tidy up. Of course you pay for the view, but at that price you still expect some fancy stuff. The dinner however was amazing - buffet with all the trimmings, mixture of everything. Probably one of the best I've ever been too. The same for breakfast, same buffet and had lots of choices. Amazing. The museum is attached it does cost to enter, no discount if you're staying at the hotel.
My husband and I traveled to New Zealand on our honeymoon and spent a couple of nights at the hotel, including New Year's eve. The room was nice, spacious and with great views, but other than that our experience was pretty average, especially considering the price. Our package included a 7-course, plated New Year's dinner. Upon booking and at check-in we specified several times that we are both vegetarian. At no point we were told that the menu did not include a vegetarian option, which we only found out when we showed up for dinner and were told to help ourselves to the buffet which was pretty average and didn't have many vegetarian options. Apart from the fact that even the most basic of restaurants should have a vegetarian option, if we had known that there wasn't one we would have made other plans. We also noticed that the outlet manager actively avoided coming to our table to check in on us, and we often had to bring our dirty plates over to the staff. We did get to enjoy the wine pairing included in the original menu, as well as the desserts specifically requested, and some of the staff was really nice. The front desk staff was also very nice although we would have expected a better compensation. I know that there is shortage of staff in New Zealand at the moment, but I can honestly say that I don't think the service lived up to the 4 stars of the hotel.
This hotel is overpriced, the room is old but the view is good depending on which room you booked. Even if you booked the room with no view, it's still not worth it. The water in the shower isn't powerful, it makes it hard to shower with such little amount of water coming out. It's probably because this hotel is near Mount Cook, that everything is expensive. The buffet is overpriced as well, not worth it. I couldn't believe that this hotel was my most expensive purchase for my whole trip. All the other hotels I stayed at were cheaper and better on the quality.
Beautiful location and hotel! It includes a fabulous and huge buffet breakfast, and I highly recommend making reservations for dinner as well. It was a great buffet with really good food. It is up near Mt. Cook, and there isn't anything else up there besides the hotel. They also have tours, a theater, and a planetarium. We had a fabulous stay; I would highly recommend a stay here!
The location is superb and amazing however the rooms for the price need maintaining and are tired. The evening buffet was lovely. However we booked in early Oct and asked for 3 rooms together and were put quite away from each other...Very disappointing.
