The Pixie Pie aka Bourbon, Bacon, Cheese and Jalapeño is the best on the South Island. I am a qualified pie judge and highly recommend you make a detour to your trip and stop here. These are not homemade pies, these are handcrafted artisan masterpieces of pure indulgence and joy.
First timer at amberley pies while on the road. Greeted by awesome staff. Good chats with the team and owner. Myself and partner bought a pie each for immediate consumption and then back in for a couple more for later. Damn good pies. Texas Twinkie ftw.
Stopped in on our way to Mount Grey as had heard really good things about this place. Was a little underwhelmed to be fair, I got the Peppersteak which looked promising with the amount of pepper on the top. But the filling had zero pepper through it! The filling was a firm gravy and had a good amount of steak through it also. Mate got the steak and cheese and sausage roll and wasn’t stoked but content. Overall a decent experience but didn’t meet expectations.
This is a DEFINITE stop for the BEST pies. Amberley Pies has definitely mastered the perfect pies! The crust is perfect with a flaky yet perfect crispiness. The fillings are filled to the perfect consistency. They have mastered an even consistency of every ingredient inside. Hands down this place won our hearts & vote for the BEST PIES we had on our 2 weeks in NZ. I definitely recommend you make this 1 of your stops.
Stopped here for lunch, and we tried the steak and cheese, chicken and mushroom, and Philly cheesesteak pies. The steak and cheese was one of the best I've ever had, with plenty of meat and a delicious, flaky pastry. The same can be said of the Philly pie, with a good amount of meat, onions, and peppers. The chicken and mushroom pie didn't quite hit the same level as the beef pies, falling short in flavor and needing more salt or parmesan, IMO. Overall, a great experience, and we will be back!
