Definitely one of the most exceptional experiences I’ve had in New Zealand and in general. I wasn’t sure before whether this tour would be worthwhile given the not-so-low budget price. But it was worth every cent! Expect spectacular views, insights into glaciers, and some blue ice if you’re lucky! Our guide Kevin was very knowledgeable, attentive and kind, making sure all of us had a fantastic experience. We got so lucky with the weather. Do plan enough time to wait for good weather in Fox, just to make sure you get to experience the flight and hike to the fullest!
This place offers a Good Chopper Ride to Fox Glacier and a guided hike through the glaciers. They have a set of well trained and professional pilots, guides, loaders, and admin staff. It's worth a ride to the glaciers with them for memorable experience!
This was touch and go as the weather almost meant a cancellation. There is a briefing after 15min of waiting then after about 25-30min you get on a bus. Some waiting to get on the helicopter too But then wow wow wow, the ride up itself is amazing, you see the glacier appear through the clouds. We spent 2.5h up on the glacier being shown around with a guide who was fabulous and who used his ice pick to make paths for us. Went into a small alcove and into a small crevice, also got to try a fresh stream of glacier water.
Was initially booked to do the heli hike at Franz Josef but due to bad weather it got cancelled fortunately we managed to secure a booking at Fox Glacier Guiding. Did our trip in March and opted for a morning hike hoping the weather would hold up for us. Apparently 60% of trips get cancelled due to how quickly the weather changes. So even if you have a booking you may not get the chance to fly up for the heli hike. We stayed at an Airbnb called The Pod with mountain views in Fox Glacier hosted by Kirsty which had the best sunset! Our heli hike briefing kicked off at 0750HRS and was very well delivered by our super knowledgeable and professional guide Jake. Hopped on the helicopter at 0830HRS. The flight up was quick and smooth in the morning. It was super thrilling with awesome views even for someone who is afraid of heights and flying in general; I felt very safe on the helicopter. Definitely a must do in NZ. Once in a lifetime experience not to be missed! Spent about 3hours hiking on the glacier with Jake hacking away at the ice to help make the route friendlier. Jake was also passionately educating us about everything from A to Z about how the different ice formations are formed to how it has been retreating due to climate change. All in all a 10/10 experience!
100% recommend the heli hiking tour. Our guide Ivar was friendly and knowledgeable. The team was professional and courteous. Weather can be unpredictable so it’s best to have flexibility in your schedule when booking.
This is one of the best experience throughout our NZ South Island trip. The weather for the day that we signed up was cloudy and we were unable to fly, and decided to extend our stay at Fox and rearrange our schedule so that we could get the best experience in the best weather. It was definitely worth it. We were giving safety briefing, waterproof jackets, thick socks, boots, and a backpack for our own belongings. It’s best to carry light so my friends and I only brought along our winter jacket which we didn’t use as we it was getting warmer as we hike, sunglasses useful as the sunlight reflects on the glacier, gloves and hair tie. Also, the helicopter seat arrangement depends on your + your belonging’s weight, so you might get to sit at the front seat with the pilot if you are the lightest in the group. As we came in group of 3, I sat behind my 2 friends that got the front seat. Still happy I got to be in their heli selfie pic. Our guide for that day was Cam. He was passionate with his job, and you could ask him anything, anything at all including his personal life he said. Hence, it was fun and one of the participants asked if the glacier could be eaten and he knocked off some and gave to us to have a bite. We could tell he really loves his job, and we wished the glacier hike experience was longer so we could get to know more about the glacier. All in all, this is a weather dependent activity and we had the best experience with the sunny day, earliest hiking slot, our glacier-passionate and handsome guide Cam.
Sensational trip up to the glacier with a 3 hour long hike exploring various nooks and crannies on the glacier. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience to remember for a very long time. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. The gear you get supplied with is in excellent condition and saves the headache of travelling with bulky cold weather gear. Thank you for an exceptional experience.
The tour was really fun and our guide Kevin and the lady who seems like a new spot explorer? were amazing, they found a new cave and just set up everything at the moment! Very cool!
Embarking on the Heli Hike with Fox Glacier Guiding was a true adventure, heightened by our fantastic guide, Kevin. His wealth of knowledge on the glacier, hiking, and climbing added depth to the experience. We even got hands-on, creating ice steps and anchoring in the glacier—an unforgettable touch. The cherry on top was the fact that it was our very first helicopter flight, making the brief 5-minute ride to the top all the more special. The panoramic view of the glacier and valley is nothing short of breathtaking. Luck was on our side as the trip wasn't canceled, despite prior days facing weather challenges. Do make sure to book tickets well in advance since the book tends to be fully booked in the touristic season.
- It’s a wonderful trip! Many thanks to my guides, Flo and Thomas. We have a great time for tasting glacier pure water. First time our booking was cancelled due to bad weather. Thank Hilary who work in reception for recommending us other places to travel. She is very kind and patient.
