Must try in Franz Josef! We ordered lamb shank, chicken breast and seafood chowder. All tasted great, especially the lamb shank. Tenderness is just nice. Even the side vegetables on the plates tasted delicious. Service staff were polite and cheerful. We were a little early for dinner so the place was empty but people started to come in after 6pm. We are glad we tried this on our last night here!
Really superb comfort food in a cozy setting. The views of the mountains and glaciers are unbeatable. Sit outside for a sunset view, and go for the classic NZ dishes. The lamb shank and the salmon risotto are cooked beautifully. Their namesake beer is tasty and a must try. The service is prompt and friendly, despite the staff shortage and the restaurant being full at 7 pm on Wednesday. No need to make a booking, walk ins are accepted.
Had a beer and steak with chips. The beer was good. The chips and vegetables were also good. Chips are hot and the vegetables not over cooked. The steak was a little tough and let the overall meal down. The sauce was tasty, so next time I may try another dish rather than steak. Thank you.
We are speechless… the best seafood chowder, beef cheek and steak we haven’t had for a while. The young fella gave such a great, prompt and welcoming service to us. Thanks to the chef, team and owner Jennie for an unforgettable experience! Such an authentic kiwi meal. We will be back one day just for dinning again! They deserve more business and support in this pandemic and we hope all the best to you guys!
Nice cosy restaurant tucked away from the main street in Franz Josef. We ordered the garlic bread, chicken salad, lamb and beef cheek. The lamb was the highlight but all meals were amazing. The service was exceptional and short wait times. We came at 5pm before it got busy and there were many tables available.Food: 5/5
Lovely spot in Franz township. The restaurant has a very interesting back story and comfy feel. The food came in huge portions and was really good other than my chicken being a bit on the dry side. Loved having the variety of vegetables and the yummy mushroom sauce! Partner thoroughly enjoyed the spicy prawn pasta
We recently visited Alice May in Franz Josef and had a good experience. The food was delicious and the ambience was cozy and inviting. If you sit outdoors, you can enjoy the stunning mountain view. Unfortunately, the restaurant seemed to be a bit short-staffed during our visit, which resulted in a longer wait for our food. However, the staff were all very pleasant and attentive. Overall, we would recommend Alice May for a nice meal and a comfortable atmosphere. The mountain view is a nice added bonus!
Service was nice and friendly and super fast. We wouldn’t have waited anymore than 5 mins from when we ordered our lamb shank to when it arrived on our table. The apple and blackberry pie as well as the sticky toffee pudding were delicious. Table clearing was quick between each course and we didn’t have to wait very long after mains for our dessert.
A great evening out. Can't speak highly enough about the staff trying their very best as they were shortstaffed due to Covid. Extensive menu, reasonable pricing and a great atmosphere. Hope to get back there again one day.
Seating outside offers views of the glacier and people taking pictures of said glacier in the middle of the street. The food was delicious with huge portions. The fish from the fish and chips was massive. The shrimp spaghetti was very tasty as well. Throw in a cold drink and you're good to go. While you wait you can read about Alice May. Recommended.
