When it was built in 1882, the Alexandra Bridge was one of the country’s largest, strongest and most beautiful bridges, a feat of engineering.nnIt is in remarkable condition and a testament to the engineer that the structures have withstood the power of the Clutha/Mata-au, one of New Zealand’s largest and swiftest rivers, for over 130 years.nnThough these structures are the remnants of the suspension bridge, the decking and cables having been removed in 1958, they are a reminder of the importance of bridges in this water-riven country.
No visit to Alexandra is complete without a photo of the bridge. Both the historic and the new one. Autumn makes for a colourful image and on a still day you can get great reflections in the river.
This is the new Alex Bridge, built around 1962 and replaces the old historic bridge, currently visible beside it. This is the main bridge spanning across the Clutha Mata-Au River and provides a nice backdrop against the city.
Nice little walk along the riverbank.
Magic scenery and great history. Well worth a look!
