Albany Junior High School

About

Albany Junior High School a year 7-10 state school located on the North Shore of Auckland New Zealand

Story

Albany Junior High School is a junior high school situated in North Harbour, Auckland, New Zealand.

Establishment

Opened in 2005, it was the first purpose built Junior High in New Zealand. The school was opened by the then Prime Minister Helen Clark who said that the school was a model for future middle level schooling in the country.

The concept of a junior high school is controversial in New Zealand. Two more junior high schools are being built in Manukau, and there are five others already operating.

Organisation

There are currently nearly 1200 students attending, with the school still expanding. The average number of students per class is around 30.

The school caters for years 7–10, after which most of the students will move on to the nearby Albany Senior High, which opened in 2009.

Facilities

Teaching blocks
The blocks are named after native New Zealand birds. So far four of the planned five have been built - Kiwi, Makomako, Ruru, and Tui. Each has a series of normal classrooms together with specialised classrooms such as science laboratories or art rooms and a courtyard.

The bell is an unusual exotic bell, consisting of native bird call, and is different in areas of the school.

Support blocks[edit]
These include:

PAC (Performing Arts Centre), currently being lengthened), is a small hall/gym with a full data-projection system. This is where most drama lessons are held.
Gymnasium, which is large and is used for sports (both storing and practical use) and inside is the sports coordinators offices and changing rooms. Because of its size, it is used for the school prize-givings and when the entire school has their full school assembly. There are two data-projection screens and a wireless microphone.
Admin. Inside is two public desks (the main one at the front for visitors and the one at the back for students), administration offices and learning support. Also in the building is the staffroom and library.
Music department with sound proof practise rooms, a dance studio, a large keyboard room for practice and sound proof classrooms.

A majority of the teachers are absolutely horrible. Year 9s are expected to have the maturity of adults despite most being around fourteen, most of the teachers do not care if students have learning disabilities or other conditions that hinder their learning and treat them exactly the same if not worse than neurotypical students. Teachers ignore when students are being bullied or otherwise harmed and don't go further than just telling the bullies to stop as though they will listen. Some students are outright abusive towards other students, and the school does nothing against this behaviour aside from putting up anti-bullying posters. Would not recommend sending any child to this school.
Not a very nice school, instead of helping students they blame students especially diverse learners. School does fail their duty of care towards students. It is a very vile and toxic school.
School was okay, staff was okay, quality of learning was below average
Best school I have ever attended. I can't explain how good this school is because for me it's no longer just a school it feels like a second family. They not only focus on educational growth but also on individual growth. You can not find a better school for your son/daughter in the whole of NZ. Do yourself a favor and enroll now... You will not regret it for a single second of your life.
Summary: Great School, People are just complains so much about nothing. I’ve seen a lot of people put poor reviews complaining about curriculum or teachers. I think many people have a completely skewed idea of school and forget their privilege. I went to. AJHS for 4 years and yes there were ups and downs, but the ups by far outweighed the downs - AJHS was a great school, it had great resources, great teachers even friendlier if you got to know them, the communities were fantastic and the school had a plethora of opportunities. I really thank AJHS for the time I had there, though I might not have been the best student in class, or a teachers pet. I am proud to say that I went to Albany Junior High School. It’s thanks to AJHS that I found my passion for technology and leadership. 5 Stars - 9.8/10! Was disappointing that the class of 2021 missed their graduation due to covid
This school is full of great teachers who really care about their students. Year 9 and 10 students have many subject options that aren't offered at other schools. Programme time on Friday is also a great opportunity for students to do a variety of courses and activities.
my son whet to this school and saw his hot teacher vaping and from that day my son keep taking pic of her toes the teacher found about it and gave him a 1k to keep quiet Couse she was vaping and he could play Fortnite from 9 - 3 he has her feet pic up on his wall.11/10
This school has a horrible educational system, the 5 star reviews are all form teachers and this school is the worst thing that happened to me. The teachers are far too lazy and ignore actually problems, by far one of the worst schools in New Zealand.
Seriously? I have been to 7 different schools including this one and this makes Orewa College seem like a decent school when it comes to education. I joined AJHS in term 2 Year 8 and what I have noticed is they focus all of there quality attention of the year 7 and 8's and then a bit in year 9 and then it just seems as if they think we can do all of this stuff in year 10 when we haven't learnt how to cope with it. They basically forget about Year 10's and leave them because they want the year 7 and 8's to stay and at year 9 and 10, they really just don't care. Please I beg you, find your kid a different school if you really can. 1 good thing is that there are some really nice teachers and the principle is leaving soon soooo. Still don't really recommend. Unless it is a last resort
This school puts the wellbeing of students first and has a fantastic feeling of whanau. AJHS also has so many different academic and vocational opportunities' to excite students about their learning.
