I really enjoyed my visit to this museum. I had allowed an hour for it but without a schedule I found was still viewing, learning and enjoying it more than 1.5 hours later. The continuous loop video is a good overview of the area. Excellent historical facts on the French and the British, and the brilliance of realizing that for the success of the tourism industry the area had to “reclaim” its “Frenchness.”nnNice artifacts and such an excellent variety including Māori, French, English and assorted other items from various nationalities that from time to time came through this idyllic spot. Idyllic today but there was an extensive period of industry including, timber production, farming, and whaling.nnSeeing the inside of the one remaining French house in the centre of Akaroa is a must. Excellent information panels about its local construction and the various families and businesses that were at one time or another a part of the story of this small 2 room house. Since there are very few items to distract one from the 2 small rooms, it invites you to imagine what life may have been like during its many years.
We only came for the Frank Worsley archive material. There's not much to see apart from a whistle and his miniature dress medals, but there's a selection of written material and a few photos that i hasn't seen before.nOther than that, the museum is well laid out with good lighting.nIt has access to neighbouring buildings, the old court house and a historic house.nWith the visit.
It's a small local museum but it has plenty items to see inside. Most importantly, there is no entry fee free entry so why not spend half an hour to see some historical items related to Akaroa and New Zealand. The museum is located on the main street and is easy to find. I took some pictures of the museum collections, so feel free to see.
Surprisingly good museum. We allowed one and a half hours but could have easily spent this much time again. And this was for a quick look! It explains the the history of the interesting Akaroa location.
Very informative little museum. The story of whaling and new settlers in the area. Certainly put it on you things to see. A donation is certainly very much appreciated. Full of artifacts of the past.
