Needs a 4WD you can go in a smaller car if you dare but probably not the safest!! Definitely worth the trip, beautiful views all around. At the end of the road, the last 2 mins drive you have to walk, cars are not allowed past a point as the road is unsafe.
Pick a good day weather wise. It's not a easy drive and 4wd needed. Don't get close to edges as the wind can pick up strong. The view is spectacular, the colors of the water pure blue. Steep short walk at the end wouldn't recommend when wet and you need some fitness to come back up It's like steeping into a movieVisited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
The best. Must to visit. Go down from the hill to the sea level using the ladder. You can see sea lions on the rocks. Beautiful view
You can drive using 2wd up to this point, then I recommend to walk down to the light house the end of the cliff which will be about 15-20mins slow walk. It is steep so make sure you are up for a nice exercise personally it was worth it with the view on a nice day. I also recommend to do it in the morning around 9-10am so it won't be so hot when the sun is above your head during summer time on a nice sunny day.
Absolutely beautiful, feels like you are at the end of the earth. Good hour walk, 4wd needed to get there. Waterfall, ocean, cliffs and wildlife. Usually always seals visible on the cliffs, make sure you go to the end of the trail to climb the ladder down to sea level.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Akaroa Head Lighthouse was maintained by a keeper until automated in 1977. A century after it was built, it was moved to the current position at Cemetery Point. The original location was at Akaroa Head flanking the mouth of Akaroa Harbour on Banks Peninsula. To visit this former site follow Lighthouse Road from Akaroa. Half of the road in is tar seal, the other half is a gravel road. It is recommended to drive on it with a 4wd. However, you can drive on it in 2wd in low gear 20km in dry weather, preferably on a sunny day without any problems. I drove in trepidation on the gravel road and it was okay. There is no traffic, so you should be fine. At the department of conservation sign, you park and walk approximately 1km or 44 minutes down to the bay. I have always wanted to visit and glad I did. Akaroa Head Scenic Reserve Walk is a marine reserve. Fur seals/kekeno can be seen in the bay, with local colonies of white-fronted terns/tara, black-backed gulls/karoro, white-flippered penguins/kororā and shags.
It is highly recommended if you have a 4WD car and you are over in Akaroa you should make the journey to see this place it is definitely worth the drive and is full of absolutely beauty
Went in our electric car! Those hills are steep! It was a lovely drive though and the cliffs are pretty magnificent!
Gorgeous Headland with Seals and other wildlife playing in the rocks below. Be careful with road access as it could be tough on your car with steep shingle roads.
That is long way down on the gravel to the spot but worth wearing off by Brakes. I love this spot. It's on my favourite list for sure.
