Airspresso Queenstown

About

Airspresso: an airside cafe experience, specialising in home baking, fresh roasted speciality coffee & a décor of heritage flying stories and artefacts.

Story

Airspresso is an established airside cafe experience like no other, with operations in both main islands of New Zealand; one in New Plymouth, the other Queenstown.

The brainchild of two hospitality entrepreneurs with vastly different backgrounds, the brand has proved to be a winning formula for travellers and visitors because of its excellence in home-bake style food, fresh roasted speciality coffee and a décor of heritage flying stories and artefacts.

Craig Macfarlane has established a cluster of cafes and restaurants in Taranaki, Wellington, Hamilton and Queenstown, as well as Ozone Coffee Roasters which has a growing customer base the length of the country.

Ozone Roasteries are now burgeoning businesses in New Plymouth, and Shoreditch, London. Macfarlane also built King and Queen Hotel Suites with father in law Russell Boddington in New Plymouth, a top end accommodation experience.

Jim Hickey, well known television weatherman, pilot and coffee aficionado is the other half of the partnership. The son of a WW2 Spitfire pilot, Hickey flies his own aerobatic Yak 52 Warbird, and for years yearned to see a contemporary quality airport café adorned with local aviation heritage in his home town.

Contact and discussions with Macfarlane ensued. The synergies and strategic planning saw the embryonic plan hatch into the award winning Airspresso experience at New Plymouth airport. Customers indulge in delicious café fare and coffee excellence, in the midst of authentic vintage aviation memorabilia and biographies of local pioneer and wartime pilots.

Queenstown International Airport followed.

When Queenstown Airport Corporation CEO Scott Paterson witnessed the passion and vision for a locally-honed Airspresso model for his international airport he said: “When we went through the tender process we were really excited by Airspresso’s ideas and how they would complement the airport’s future food and beverage offerings” he says.

“Jim brings a strong passion and understanding of Queenstown and the aviation sector to the table while Craig is a go-getter with a proven track record of success here in New Zealand and London.

“This gives us confidence that the Airspresso formula will deliver the world-class experience we’re striving to achieve for our visitors”.

Killer pastries made fresh in the airport! Hot and cold drinks available. Really well done.Food: 5/5
Disappointed! I ordered fries for takeaway, the buzzer went off and I went to collect and my food , food wasn’t there, I asked the girl where I should collect my food, she said I was in the right spot. I waited, buzzer went off again still no food. Buzzer went off a 3rd time, still no food. So I walked to the front of the store and purchased a bottle of water and asked the cashier where my food was if the buzzer has gone off 3 times, he told me I need to go to the back of the restaurant, I went there still no food, I asked another girl at the counter who told me I need to go where the tv was. I went to the back where the chef was and my food was infront of where he was rolling meatballs or Patties. My food was in a plate, I said to him that I asked for takeaway as I’ll be boarding a flight with it and he just carries on talking to his colleague. I then walk around and find 2 other staff members and ask if I can get a takeaway box. They told me I had to go to the front of the store. I’m carrying 2 bags and a bottle of water and a plate of fries I walk to the front, ask another guy for a takeaway box, he looks at me and says No I’m On Break. I then find more staff and try to get their attention, they ignore me. So luckily I find a brown paper bag on the front counter and pack my fries and tomato sauce in a bag. The staff are very rude/snobby. Tables don’t get cleared on time, and they could use more cleaning.
The food was good and had lots of options. We were disappointed that while sitting in the cafe area for over an hour dirty cups and plates had not been removed from multiple tables. Some still with leftover food on them. Not a very pleasant atmosphere and since it's the only cafe after security on the domestic side, it's the last impression visitors see when leaving Queenstown.
Disappointed with the beverage that I ordered today - iced chocolate. Watered down full of milk and no taste of chocolate whatsoever. The nice lady that served me asked if I wanted ice cream but there was none in my drink either. Was too late to go back as already on the plane when I tasted it. Very disappointed especially for the price $11.
Staff didn't know how to make lemon, lime and bitters. A glass of lemonade poured and then add a few drops of bitters is NOT lemon, lime amd bitters and I told him so. He just shrugged. The local wine was poured generousFood: 2/5
I have worked in customer service for a very long time and never have I ever been turned away for "not being a customer". I was going to order breakfast but started off asking for a cup of got water. The girl at the counter first said they don't have hot water and then said, that they only have hot water for their customers. First of all, if I am at the counter, I am a customer. Secondly, she just lost the company a sale because she refused to give me got water. That interaction just turned me off. Why would I continue to order after being treated this way? The employees all need a course in customer service. You don't know who people are and what but regardless, everyone should be treated with the same level of customer service. My companion got an $8 coffee. My advice, eat before you get to the airport.
Unbelievable. Worst Queenstown experience. Bought a coffee for $5.6 and tipped the rest for a small latte, 3min later return and asked for some help with hot water as we have elderly in need. The lady is asking for $1 extra to be paid. It s not about the money, but you should be ashamed to charge extra and especially when people are in need. You should not be servicing the airport customers at all, it s where incoming and outgoing passengers needing most help , not to mention we were already your customers . Not someone didn’t buy your products at all. Have some compassion and be a human.
I believe the new name of this café is now Providence and still as bad as it was before the name change! We arrived at 5.40am at the café and was told they'll be ready to serve in 10 minutes. 10 minutes later we went back and waited to be served whilst the staff were joking around with each other and deciding who's turn it will be to make the coffee. My order went in and I stood there for another almost 10 minutes when the Barista asked me if I'm waiting for coffee. I said yes. He got the order completely wrong by serving it firstly not in a take away cup as requested, poured it into a take away cup from the glass cup and also got the coffee requested wrong. He did not seem to be bothered at all that we wanted to have a cup of coffee before flying out and that he got it all wrong because they were messing around with each other laughing and joking whilst customers are waiting to be served. A total circus and completely unprofessional. Do not recommend at all especially if you are about to board. Adult supervision is suggested because it seems you have a bunch of kids running the joint. Not impressed!
Long black was bitter and not that nice. My daughter's iced chocolate was bland. We both didn't even finish our beverages tossing out two thirds of it!
Reliable little cafe where we usually spend our time waiting for our flight. Food is well made, and there are plenty of menu options. Staff are always friendly.Recommended dishes
