Ahipara is located 14km west of Kaitaia at the southern region end of the famous 90 mile beach incorporating Shipwrecks bay. This bay is a popular surfing location commonly known as 'shippies'. It gained its name from the number of ships claimed in the area. One of these was the schooner 'Favorite' which sank in April 1870, the remains of this wreck can still be seen in the low tide surf. The name Ahipara means sacred fire and it is believed that this is the reason that the area boasts some spectacular fiery sunset
