We stayed here in January and loved the location with its proximity to the Waitomo Caves. The rooms are a little funky / quirky, so be mindful that’s what you’re after when booking - we found it had a lot of character. Breakfast eggs on toast with a special sauce by the host were fabulous, and we loved hearing from other travelers.nOther than the caves, there is very little to do so be mindful when booking - but Helen&John’s cute place is worth a detour.
Helen and John are the sweetest hosts I've ever had the pleasure to book with. They are very knowledgeable and helpful about everything to do in New Zealand, they are a pleasure to talk to, and they're up front that Abseil Inn doesn't have the same accommodations as a chain hotel like mini fridges and microwaves in each room---I didn't miss any of those things while staying here. The lounge area met all our needs and was quite fun. Our room was clean and cozy, and we really enjoyed the glowworm cave theme. Helen offered to let us use their towels while we were Blackwater rafting so we wouldn't have to carry around wet towels afterward and to let us leave our bags there during our cave trip. We forgot a small bag, they emailed us about it, and when we came to grab it, Helen offered us some more hot chocolate, and we had a nice chat while we drank it. The food they made was also very tasty. Of all the places we stayed on our trip, this was our favorite!
We stayed only for one night, so can only speak that short experience. The location is excellent from which to explore caves and beyond, the rooms adequate though echoing other comments walls and ceiling let noise through easily and I was glad I had earplugs, and breakfast was nice. I also enjoyed interacting with other guests and learning about their travels. I gave service only 3 stars because I found the host quite overbearing, and myself more bossed around rather than welcomed. All in all I think this location is a bit over-hyped online and a bit too expensive given what it offers.
Lovely little place which feels more like a homestay! Helen is so quirky and funny and John’s breakfast was one of the best I’ve ever had - must try his omelette! They had all these honeys out for us to try and fresh berries. The design is very unique loved the ceramics and their cat Bert is a cutie. The only disturbance at night was when some guests came in late and you could hear all the movement but not a big deal. It’s not a five star hotel so don’t come expecting that but if you want a comfortable NZ experience with locals this is for you.
We booked a room for 1 night here and the stay was fabulous. Our hosts were delightful and we felt at home here. The room comes with an ensuite bathroom and had a side entrance towards the parking lots. Breakfast was provided you had to indicate interest the evening before and you are bound to be full after breakfast!nnThe experience felt like us returning home to visit our grans, leaving us stomaches full and hearts warm.nnP.S there is also a chonky cat residing here!!!
